Patrol Death/Steering Wobble – Trouble Shooting & Fix

after driving into a serious donga at Groenkloof Jongosi has developed the death wobble

thank goodness for this post - I will be parking Jongosi in the garage and begin the great mend.

I have already had some LUDICROUS quotes from a number or suspension / steering shops and am taking the mantra - you break it you fix it!

On the positive note - I was out at Groot Marico over the weekend, spent the day on the dirt roads between Groot Marico and Zeerust practising my recovery skills as they had had over 100mm of rain over Friday night / Saturday morning. Thinking of renaming Jongosi ; Imvubu which means hippo in zulu

Mind sound silly - check you rims, tires and wheel balancing first - make sure the tires run straight without bounce and that the finger thingy is used instead on the cone when they balance the wheels.

I agree - especialy with all the mud on the inside of the rims - clean them out first.

Thinking of renaming Jongosi ; Imvubu which means hippo in zulu

I'm afraid the name's already taken; my wife instantly named my Patrol"Imvubu" the moment she first saw it .

Having sold it to the "father in law" he's assumed the responsibility of having the wobble fixed. Jongosi is with Boss Auto on Braam Fischer Drive in Randburg.

The fault was definitely pin pointed as the bushes being in pretty bad shape all around, with my knock at Groenkloof being sort of a last straw for the front suspension. He's having everything done and replaced, from panhard rod, tie ends, bushes, CV's, bearings the lot... the price something in the region of R24K not a cheap excercise, but he's having everything replaced using OEM parts.

Johndough we did all the "simple" checks and everything came out okay.

I'm just pleased the family now has two Trolls !!!

Sit met die selfde probleem, nadat ek jou post gelees het, het ek gesien die patrol se panhard bushes is kis het nuwes bestel. Sal intussen ook die wielbearing nagaan en seker maak die res van die balljoints is reg. ek is nou positief ek sal die wobble oplos.

Hi Dave -- Yipp, imvubu is taken .. But can oompie suggest INYATI for a name [Zulu for The Buffalo] .. [even Elephant stands back for a Buff

My Patrol is now 9 years and 2 months old, and has done 172 500km.

It has now suddenly developed The Wobble of Death. We had the third occurrence this weekend. I have experienced that it happens at any speed from 80km/h upwards. The slightest imperfection on the road surface could suddenly, unexpectedly (it does not happen often, like the Perfect Storm) and violently throw the front wheels into a wobble of imminent death, measurable on the Richter scale. It feels like the car is going to self destruct, like a chopper that lost a rotor blade in mid flight. I had to wash my youngest one's breakfast from the rear window afterwards. We were on our way to a wedding in the Free state, and my teenage daughter had to change undies at the church Point is, it has to be sorted out...

It is not possible to accelerate out of the wobble. Taking my foot off the accelerator also does not help. The only way out is to hold the steering wheel very tight and straight, and brake forcefully. Applying the brakes forcefully feels like it not only serves to lower speed, but also to positively kill the wobble.

I have read a lot on the subject and everything supports what is said in the first posts.

My question: who would you recommend in Pretoria that is dependable and knowledgeable and will go through the trial and error process to sort out my beloved friend?
