Ja, its a tough one to answer, but, in a perfect world if you had the choice right now between a brand new 4.2 (TD42 or TD42Ti doesn't matter) or a brand new ZD30 , and your folks were going to use it as you described , then without doubt the 4.2 would be the one to choose.

The 4.2 is a a very unstressed motor (big displacement,low power output,simple engineering,robust) , particularly when compared to the ZD30 (smaller displacement with greater power output and modern technology like ECU's etc).

Dont get me wrong here, there have been many a Patrol Wagon ZD30 that has done huge milage with no problems, furthermore, i have personally read the trip reports of many who have done UK to CT in the ZD30 (Almost all patrols released in UK were ZD30 derivatives) , including lots of support vehicles on rally's, and Support vehicles for UK film Productions through africa... so they CAN do the business........but...

It is common conception that the TD42 and TD42Ti variants are most suited to the tasks you mention.

I haven't watched the video yet... but 4H to 4L??.... do you not mean 2H to 4H??..... I would imagine lots of gears crunching if you slap it into 4L from 4H....

Well Nissan Bruma were sleeping, went to the guys that organised my Np200, Xtrail and Pathfinder...they found a 4.2 in an hour. Got the subject to view trade for their Disco3, my parents happy and either tomorrow or Thursday should sign the otp. Price is steep and no discount...yet.

We both got very annoyed with a salesman in Pta who had 6 LC bakkies and one Patrol bakkie.

These were his words, no I didn't reply or get sarcy eventually I HAD to walk away and let him talk to my dad.

- Don't even bother with the Patrol it's got no spares, LC you can get spares from AutoZone. With Nissan you have to import an air filter.
- LC is much stronger and more reliable, Patrol is weak, rattles and fine for having a farm close to a city
- The Ozzies love and designed the cruiser and rate it as the best 4x4, "we have to agree"
- Resale
- Spares and dealerships everywhere
- Cruiser can take like 1500kg, Patrol not even a ton.
- We must take the petrol cause you can't get fuel contamination due to petrol filters, "so what does the diesel have?", "um..."
- Reason for being stronger is that it's heavier than patrol and just look at it - Yes by -200kg...
- Patrol gearbox can't handle power thats why they only have diesel.
- Voetspore only use cruisers
- Cruiser has more "springs". - Actually I counted 3 more on the patrol...
- Petrol cruiser has 15k km service interval. - I checked it's 10k.
- Diesel cruiser has 10k km - I checked it's 5.

Then he showed us a Hilux he said even that was stronger than patrol - get this cause it too is heavier. - Yes by -350kg

I SO SO hate being objective. We were legitimately interested in the cruiser until this guy. I'm NOT anti cruiser, my virginity was taken by a cruiser ;). But man I wanted to set him straight...bit my tongue. According to my dad even if Patrol were like a Tata he did NOT want a cruiser purely due to salesman's pure strond and bashing. Be honest not ridiculously lying. If my sales staff talk kak like that they get written warnings.

We went to Nissan, Ford, Mazda as well NO ONE ran down other products except for the Toyota guy. They make out like you're an idiot for even considering anything else. They really do have a condescending tone.

Anyways hopefully I'll get to run the new Patrol in ;)...if only they had 4.2 suv.

Dieselfan, You did well mate. Walking away from a person like that is the best thing to do, as people like that have become so disillusioned that there is no sense in correcting him. A guy like that needs a cruiser owner to put him in his place, and there are many cruiser members on the LCCSA forum that would do just that.. He probably likes doing doughnuts on the weekend and has a 2wd hilux called bosvark. He's a chop.

Your dad made a wise decision. I agree, if they still sold the TD42 Wagon i would sell my wife's body for one. haha. but, i believe you have the best platform for an overlanding diesel camper rig.

I have spent many weekend with the LC Club. Great bunch of guys but not much knowledge whenit comes to 4x4's. They can only talk about there trucks. Most of the time I supprised them all . Cruisers need front and rear diff locks to go where we do.

Makano motors is a LC specialist gaurage and mad you must see how they line up there on Mondays after the trail. Gearbox and diff problems. Had my clutch fitted at Makano and Johan (owner) commented that they the Trolls GB and TB are at least 25 kg's heavier .

As for the 30 TDI, most other manufacturers are moving to the new diesel technology with common rail pressure goign to the 200 bar mark. Look what the diesels are dooing at Le Mans . I would give Nissan the oppertunity to prove the 30 tdi. Look at the great job they have done with the Navara, Juke, Qashqui, NP 200, and the GTR.

Good post Grant, i agree with you. I know the time will come when there are no longer any low-tech vehicles around, but im glad DieselFan's pa got one of the old school motors for this application this time. A good choice.

The Auzzies are also bleak about the move toward the 3.0 but, i have actually read some very good feedback from those who have had to make the move. However, i fear the second hand market will be a danger zone once we start selling and trading in. I for one wouldnt like to buy a 3.0 second hand.

To be fair, there are the wise old ballies on the LCCSA forum who really have a dee respect for the patrol, and thats nice to see, because they not scared to put a guy in his place when he starts bad-mouthing this fine product. cheers to them.
