I think they've realised you're a bit more educated about 4.2's than they want you to be....I'd be wary. I've got a feeling this is the same blue 4.2 that's been doing the rounds! The one I got my Turbo from! If it is the same one then it was running high boost and was abused and the engine crapped out. If you get a chance to take a picture of the engine bay please do so. I might be able to tell you if it's really N/A or was turboed previously. See the picture below, if it was turboed previously it will potentially have this oil-feed line that has been capped off. If it does have this then WALK AWAY! Also check where the air filter is situated and the manifold (see pics below). The airfilter on a N/A should run parallel (inline) to the engine and not be cramped in the back like that. That large bent pipe is part of the Safari Turbo kit. If the manifold has and bungs/bolts on it...then it's not stock! These are for EGT guages and were not part of the original manifolds.
I've got 362,000km's on my 4.2 N/A and she starts up and purrs like a tiger cub first time...everytime...if this is the same truck as above I'd be VERY wary of it and tbh I wouldn't give them R60k for it....
I think even swambo will blikseem me if I buy that one. She was not impressed in the least. I think this one I'm going to give a big skip. The patrol can only be as reliable as the abuse the previous owner gave it.
I went to the Cape to see my folks and there was a red patrol advertised there for R89k. It had high milage and was advertised as a 4.2 diesel. When I schlepped all the way out to Malmsbury only to find out that its actually a 4.5 motor....... (needless to say I was the *%^%&% in). ....... BUT, this patrol was in quite good shape (excl. sunroof and drivers seat not working), If I was looking for a 4.5 I think I could have squeezed him down to around R80k.
So the wait goes on..... (surfing the net looking for that illusive 4.2)
Keep the faith man! The right one will come along! They're definitely worth the wait! Don't rush into buying one that you're not 100% happy with..there are too many bastids that thrash these poor things and then flog them off to become someone else's nightmare! TD42 all the way!
R89k sounds WAY too low and very much like a desperate seller to me....I wonder if that's the red one that's changed hands a couple of times in the last year or two? There is such a limited amount of these vehicles around that you get to know which ones are available....and more importantly WHY they're available!
I agree ..... I think you hit the hammer on the thumb..... ... There aren't many around, so someone will know something about a 4.2 or even the 4.5/4.8 doing the rounds in the marketplace.
Good milage, if the service history checks out. The photo looks nice. The price is a little high, but maybe you can negotiate a bit? Also, its worth paying a bit more for a good one.

Yeah I have spoken to him twice. He'll drop to R155k, but I still think its a bit high...... Going to work on him a bit.... and see what I can do.... (I'm just not a fan of red cars, but hey beggars can't be choosers ...... )
But thanks for the lead..... I'm looking everywhere at the moment........ so keep them coming guys!!
Net nog n verskil op die oorsprongklike turbo en non turbo.Die na se breather op die tappetcover wys na die intake manifold en die turbo model na die exhaust manifold.
Sorry vir my taal meng.
Groete

I see that they still have it advertised, so they must be battling to sell it.
Out of curiosity, what would a replacemrnt 4.2 motor go for at a nissan dealer and at a recon motor company? The reason I ask is that the dealer said they spent about R40k on the motor (but we all know the generalisation of 2nd hand car dealers and trust)
