Concerns about a 4.2 motor
Hi,
I'm still looking at a 1998-1999 - 4.2 Patrol, and I see there is a 1998 one in centurion. I contacted the dearlership and asked a few questions. I was told it doesn't have a turbo on, which is fine, I can look into that later. The Patrol has 179 000Km but was told that it has a "new reconditioned motor". This is a concern to me cause why would it need a recon motor, especially seeing that it is turbo-less????
What is your opinions on this?

Re: Concerns about a 4.2 motor
As I understand those 4.2 diesel are unbrakeable except if you run it without water. If the reconditioning was done by a reputable place I would condsider it but my gut feeling would still say WALK AWAY, maar dis maar my persoonlike gevoel. A lot of reconditioned engine carry on for long and others don't.
With a recon one never really know if all the problems was identified and fixed
Shalom

Re: Concerns about a 4.2 motor
I agree Jules, It is a worry when one doent know. I am wary to believe what the dealer tells me too, as he probably just wants to sell the vehicle and get it off his lot.
He wants R 129 000 for the Patrol, which is a bit steep I think.

Re: Concerns about a 4.2 motor
Dude its simple, no matter what the circumstances are/have been/will be, if you have a bad feeling about it just leave it and buy another one when the right one comes. dont rush. Otherwise you'll never get into that car without feeling those of uncertainty. not worth it.
any motor can pack up, with or without turbo's. All circumstantial in any event.
Judge each car on its own and don't compare to another (ie:dont pick the best of a bad bunch, rather wait)
It'll happen, but this one doesn't sound like yours.
Best of Luck!

Re: Concerns about a 4.2 motor
Thanks guys.
Most times I'm very pessimistic, and that goes with most things I buy. sometimes to my detriment. I thought about it, and decided to go look with an open mind, and judge the car on what it is and on the info I can get on the car. I don't think I'll jump in both feet first..... yet...
I'm going to the Cape in 2 weeks, and there is another Patrol out there that I can also have a look at.
Good things come to those who wait .......

Re: Concerns about a 4.2 motor
Good day
I agree with Russ, any motor can get a problem off some sort. All depends on how the previos owner looked after it.
For what its worth those 4.2 parts are availeble aftermarket(very good)Everything for about R10000.

Re: Concerns about a 4.2 motor
I went to look at the Patrol, even though the dealer had closed early to go to the rugby......hmmmmm..... I'll post a few pics for comment.... and please comment.
When I spoke to them on the phone they said they spent R42k on the re con motor via Nissan. How true that is, I'm not sure. I'll find out more on the motor. If the motor is a Nissan rebuild, what price would you guys recon is a fair price, considering the photo's. Whan I looked between the tyre and the rubber flap into the engine bay it looked like there was a new alternator fitted. couldn't really see much of the block.

- This here makes me think that the Patrol has been resprayed. The blue paint is still visable between the doors, where the silver has chipped away.

Re: Concerns about a 4.2 motor
Cedric,
Any job done by Nissan will be visible on Nissan's electronic systems. If, in this case, you can track the jobcard, at least you can get behind the story of the original problem.
This car is not a new car and should show the scars that comes with time, however, neglect of vehicle maintenance is something else and is always visible. I am more concerned about a neglected vehicle with low milage than a well maintained vehicle with high milage. Neglect brings hidden problems with it. Neglect often goes with "corner cutt" maintenance as well. Therefore, (example) if this car is fitted with a new alternator, is it the right capacity alternator...etc?
Good luck!

Hi,
I reckon you can kill the 4.2 N/A very quickly if you don't change the oil or suck in some water. Have you driven it?

Re: Concerns about a 4.2 motor
No not yet, I am gob-smacked as I've left 2 messages for them to call me, and still haven't heard enything. Mahindra Centurion must be making LOTS of money to not even bother to call back.
I think they will battle their donkeys off to sell that vehicle at that price in that condition.
But I'll wait.... good things come to those who wait....
