Loss of fuel pressure on very steep uphill

Vehicle is '98 4.2 diesel NA
So I was at Moegatle on the weekend and the vehicle slowly stalled on two separate obstacles while I was attempting to crawl up.
I have done both of those obstacles before without this issue.
I did an oil change service (265k) on Wednesday before the weekend and also replaced the fuel filter.
Something weird happened though....
After putting the new filter in, I couldnt get the thing primed with the manual pump on the filter. I Even filled the new filter with diesel to help it along. Eventually I got it right. This is the 4th time I'm replacing the filter so I have done it before... with ease.
I thought there may be a crack in one of the rubber fuel hoses running up to the filter and down to the pump, so I bought some new hose and fitted it on Friday.
The tank was just over half full while I was on these obstacles.
so... what's wrong?
1. perhaps the manual pump membrane is leaking
2. perhaps there is a perished hose between the tank and the fuel line
3. perhaps the Diesel pump is vrot (I don't think so, it goes fine on the road, no problems...
4. perhaps the diesel pump is just not up to the task(I don't think so, I have done those obstacles in the same vehicle with no issues)
Ideas?...
