Going to a smaller rim diameter does not necessarily imply losing ground clearance, because that is determined by the outside diameter of the tyre and tyres of different aspect ratio are available.
For instance, the Patrol's standard tyre size of 265/70R16 has a nominal diameter of 30.6", which is very close to the 31" nominal diameter of a 31x10.5R15 tyre that would fit a 15" rim. Likewise a 285/75R16 tyre has a nominal diameter of 32.8", which is very close to the 33" nominal diameter of a 33x12.5R15 tyre.

It is debateable whether this is better. The standard Patrol rims have an offset of 10mm, while most aftermarket rims have an offset of 0mm or a negative offset. This moves the wheels outboard (effectively widening the wheel width), but also increases the load on wheel bearings and steering system (not that I doubt for one moment that the Patrol is hugely over-engineered in these areas as well

). Wide set wheels increase vehicle stability, but does a better job of chuckking stones at the bodywork and mud past the wheel arches.
