Radiator
I am urgently looking for a newly imported or reasonably refurbished radiator for my Y 61, 4.5l petrol, year 2001.
The original one is apparently 14.000 Rand which I can't afford.
I need it as a matter of urgency. Any advise appreciated.

Johannes, you made 3 posts in different places, so not sure which to reply on....haha..( If I can make a suggestion... see if you can delete the other posts... the guys will reply on this one if they can offer suggestions.
But on a serious note....
Replacement radiators can be sorted out a LOT cheaper than R14k.... as I assume this is from Nissan.
My suggestion is contact Silverton Radiators. I have a 4.2 diesel, that has a (I am told ) Cabstar truck radiator fitted. I bought my Patrol with this already in, but there was a Silverton Radiators sticker on it. This radiator is a lot thicker than the standard one which gives me fantastic cooling.... my gauge is always just below half even when working the motor. There will probably be a few modifications that would need to be made, but I'm sure that it will be a LOT less than R14k.
Alternatively let them build you up a radiator, and while at it make it a little thicker too... this too I believe will be a LOT cheaper than R14k. I'll guess here and say that it might cost between R5000- R8000.
The other route is to contact Jean Volschenk. I know he was stripping a few Patrols, and may have what you need.... but he is in Swaziland though.
Have a read through this quickly... Yes its for the diesel, but the principal remains the same... and read on, as there is a guy that did a 4.2 GQ radiator ( Peter Connan)

Thanks so much for your reply. I phoned Silverton already and they would make one for me for 7 grands but Graham Cumming is sceptical about them. Says that they don't fit perfectly. Do you have good experiences with them? Can I phone you to talk to you?

I dealt with Silverton Radiators in Alberton, when I had a bolt shoot into my radiator. They looked after me well, and I have had no issues. But on that other post I attached, there was a post from Peter Connan about a guy in Jet Park who made up a radiator for his petrol 4.2 (GQ model). Peter is, in my opinion, a pretty clued up guy regarding engineering and if Peter says that he is happy with his radiator, I would be comfortable in saying that they are worth a shout. SAC ( Centurion) will also be able to help you ... but I think thay will be a little more in price. But this may include installation.... and naturally they have to guarantee their product and workmanship, The Jet park guys, I don't know if that's including installation.

As Cedric has pointed out, I had a radiator made up by Thermo Radiators, who are in Jet Park. The radiator is a complete fabricated unit made from copper, using only the top and bottom plates from the original radiator (in the Y60 I have, the tanks are on the sides of the radiator, not top and bottom like your car, and it mounts on the top and bottom plates). As a result the radiator fitted perfectly into the car and the standard fan shroud also bolted straight on. The piping configuration was also faithfully copied. As a result, no modification was necessary whatsoever. This radiator cost me less than half the money you are talking about.
However, copper is not the ideal material for a radiator in my opinion. I would have preferred an aluminium radiator, but for some reason it is apparently almost impossible to source aluminium radiator cores at the moment (I was told this by seven different radiator specialists, and must thus believe it to be true). Copper is much more robust than an aluminium radiator, but I also heavier (not really an issue) but also less thermally efficient (although this is solved because they use a thicker core) and the only remaining issue is that a galvanic reaction can occur between the aluminium parts in the engine and the copper of the radiator. To prevent this, it is necessary to earth the radiator to both engine and chassis, so even that is simple to solve.
However, my radiator has a slight leak somewhere and I have yet to get around to taking it back in...

Thanks for your comprehensive response. I am perhaps going to have it done by Silverton in Randburg. They say they make it out of copper AND alluminium. And they don't use the original plastic frame. Its just a completely new thing. The charge 7 grants. How does this sound to you?

There was some information on this site where a guy had a big problem with his radiator that was build with copper because there is a big problem between copper and aluminium. You should have some earth connectors on the copper to try and solve the problem.
