I have had a relatively loud whine / whistle on my 30 DTI's turbo ever since I bought the car 4 yrs ago. It is at its loudest when the engine is still cold, and then decreases in pitch and volume as the car warms up. Lately (after my mechanic passed a comment) she seems to be whistling a little more, even when the engine is warm - ok I can hear it more when the sunroof is open! However, my question is this: Does the volume or amount of whistling have any bearing on the state of the turbo?? Does it perhaps mean that I'm nearing the end of its lifespan?
If this is the case, who does one source a replacement turbo from, (in Gauteng) and what do they cost? I'm sure Nissan is way overpriced as with everything from their spares dept.
Also is any damage caused when it goes and one is travelling at 120km/h - can you still drive the vehicle with a blown turbo?
Anyone got their 5c worth??!!

Re: Whining Turbo
You rarely have to replace the turbo, you can just service / overhaul it. Normally costs around 3k. There a quite a few places that will do this. It not a major job and will take about 2 days. Your whistle generally is a sign that it's on it way out. You can drive it like normal in the meantime or you can go ahead and overhaul while you choose the "break down time" instead of a road side job.
A blown turbo isn't as bad as it sounds but it does normally mean you can't drive as you lose oil. Left unattended you can pop your motor which is as bad as it sounds.
My 5c, have it overhauled. Get a few quotes from the big guys. It is a service item.

Re: Whining Turbo
Damn, that's another expense to contend with - but thanks for the advice guys, I suppose it is much better to be forewarned and choose when to do it rather than be left at the roadside!! How long do serviced / reconned turbo's last and what do they replace - bearings .... rotor blades... I suppose it depends on the general condition. I'll give oom Mac a call.
