Hi Bruce:
1 - check for WATER in the oil
2- Check for OIL in the water

HEAD my be fine but the gasket not torqued on correctly

According to the mecahnic at Imperial Nissan: Menlyn, the ZD30 engine has a "self levelling" water [coolant] system [how it works, I dont know

If you need a new turbo - I have one [still under guarantee ]
If you need a head -- I have one [not the one on my neck -- the head for the ZD 30 motor WWW

It sounds like there is a crack in the head or a leaky head gasket.'

Take it to a reputable cooling system specialist and have them do a pressure test on the system, and a gas test in the ratiator.
Mag ons ons kenniskry met lekkerkry aanhoukry.

One other thing to check first.
1) radiator cap?? Let someone like Silverton radiators check that
2) Anti freeze ?? Here i'm a firm believer in not using anything other than genuine Nissan OR Silverton Radiator recommended ( They know what they are doing ) Is there any in and is it the correct ratio??
3) Thermostat ?? It may be the wrong one (temp open and close not correct) or it may be sticky ( the gauge on the instrument cluster I'm told has a big tolerance and only moves up to the overheat side when the temp is hitting overheating temps.

While Silverton is doing a check on your radiator cap let them check for exhaust gasses in the radiator water. and look in the radiator and the overflow bottle to see if there is any oil residue on the surface of the water. If all this is fine then I would say there is an issue between the head and the block. Either the head is cracked, the head gasket is faulty ( again here I'm a firm believer that you MUST use a genuine Nissan gasket !!). What I found on my motor ( 4.2 diesel ) was that the sleeves are supposed to protrude above the head, and I stand corrected, by 0.3mm. I'm not sure if the ZD 30 has sleeves but would presume that it does.

This could be where the gasses are getting into the water.

Also check if you have excessive blow back oil feeding back into the turbo and intercooler.

Keep us posted !!!

Cedric

Bruce tell the previous owner to give you proof of his statements about the head, surely he should have some documentation about the work done and the outcome.

Good luck
