2008 Nissan Patrol 3.0 Diesel M/T

Post by NISMOnator »

Hi Everyone,

I am new here and NO I don't have a 4x4 as yet! I've been searching and looking at various vehicles, but honestly mostly only Nissan as I am a big fan and have a lot of respect for they're off-road abilities.

I am also on the NIssan 4x4 forum, where I started by looking at a Navara 4.0 V6. But after viewing a lot of vehicles, reading up getting mixed feedback from various people. I started looking all over. But let me rather get to the point.

I am hoepfully going to have a peak at a 2008 Nissan Patrol 3.0 Diesel today, what do I have to look out for? Is the engine good and reliable? I did a lot of research and found that the previous (hopefully) generation of this engine has a nickname called granade in AUS?

Should I steer clear or are they ok? Saw the VOETSPORE team had 3 of them on a trip. Any info would help. Up untill now I was very confused to what I want to have and buy....the guys on the Nissan 4x4 forum knows this.....
hahahaha

But I really like the Patrol or lets say we (wife and I) really likes the legendary Patrol, but I am damped after reading so much up yesterday about the 3.0 Diesel. Could anyone shed light on this subject.

I am very new in this 4x4 thing and I am going to ask a lot of questions, sorry if i am getting annoying and asking silly questions, but they are not silly to me.

Now please let the comments role in before I view this vehicle.

Hi ,

Yes there has been a lot said about the 3.0 lt Diesel. I suggest you call Driko. He owns one and is busy getting it ready as a overland vehicle. I run a old 4.2 lt diesel and have had 380k km of trouble free motoring.

I have found that the major contibutpor to trouble free motoring is maintenance. I never skip a service and have a replacement plan rather that a failure and then replace plan.

I had a 3.0 Diesel Patrol - 2002 model - and yes the engine did 'blow' with me _ BUT due to NISSAN Dealership incompetence that did the diagnostics with a faulty "console" that showes a swithc on teh gearbox faulty instead of the over fueling problem which it was
After i had teh engine overhauled , it was a dream to drive

After 2003 the ECU and engine settings were fixed by Nissan - and since, they are as reliable as any other diesel on the market today [actually MORE so, i blieve]
When you get it - IMMEDIATELY dadelik onmiddelik = have a "EGT guage installed [MADMAN is about the best]
Drive within teh EGT parameters always, and you have a 500thousand kilometer trouble free vehicle .. ENJOY the trol.
[and 10 Km Liter is to dream of in car half the size and ability of the Trol]

Hello and welcome

I own a 2003 diesel with about 148000km on the clock. :woo: Bought her with 118000km on. So next year she will be 10 years old, with no squeaks and rattles.

I agree with both the comments above. Do the maintaince, install an EGT, (with careful driving you should be able top keep the exhaust temp below 550 degrees ) fill up where possible with 50ppm diesel and you will have a great vehicle for a long time. I use mine daily, on the open road cruising at 110 km/h I get between 9/10 km/l depending on the traffic jams. In town I get 7/7.5, but even that is not bad taking the size and comfort in consideration.

Regards

Mine is also a 2003 model, bought with 118000km and now up to 165000km. I have no EGT gauge, but drive like a granny! My concern is for the previous drivers, I know that the services were all done on time but that's all - I have no other knowledge or info as to how the vehicle was treated so.... am I possibly in for a nasty surprise or is she going to continue going like a dream? Only time will tell - I do know that the way I look after her she should'nt give me any problems.

Tony - the killer issue for the up to 2003 models were the ECU overfuelling -- so doe TWO things: Check with you VIN number at NISSAN if your car qualify for the ECU replecement by factory .

ALSO -- Fit that EGT monitor [Madman or similar] like in YESTERDAY

having a chip fitted is in two minds .. if you dont have one, keep it like so -- just throw away that "tight" exhaust and fit a 63mm free flow [and branches if you can afford them]
Then - ask Grootseun nicely to re-map for you .. NO 4.2 diesel can stay with the 3.0 on the long road :oldtimer: :oldtimer:

veral as daar opdraendes is

Thank you to you all for all the info it helps.

I had a look at the vehicle yesterday, but I was shocked at how basic this vehicle was and how terribly it was looked after. It was the GU, it seems that we only het the entry level 3.0 Diesel here and the full house 4.8 petrol (WHICH IS A THIRSTY BUGGER). But I think I am going to try and bight the bullet and look at the 4.8 GRX.

Everyone says they are bulletproof? Is this true?
How is the autobox on the GRX? Reliable or does it have issues?
I normally prefer manual, but the GRX only comes in auto it seems. Is there anything I should look out for when viewing these vehicles?

Thank you
