4.8 manual Wanted

Post by XenoBlitz »

I have finally conviced John to get rid of his Hilux and buy something proper.

He's insisting on a manual. Is there anyone willing to let go of a 4.8 with 150k km or less?
May the road be long.. and dirty.

Wilhelm tell him that I, who used to be the biggest manual gearbox fan in the world, says that he is NUTS!

If you saw what I saw at 3provinsies (and other places) there is only one 4.8 Patrol to buy, and that's the auto. A 4.8 Auto patrol on 33" muddies just makes all the rest of us look like amatuers

The only disadvantage it has is that you can't push-start it when the battery is flat, or the starter motor packs up. And the starter motor's on 4.8 Patrols don't pack up too often, and as for flat batteries, that's what dual battery systems are for.

Peter.

It took me 3 years to convince him to get the Patrol.

Telling him what to buy is no small task. Let him stew in his own madness then. :)
Personally I think he's afraid of the vehicle breaking down in Africa and then towing might become an issue with the Automatic. (He doesn't know PATROL yet.)

Still. If anyone wants to let go of theirs, please let me know.
May the road be long.. and dirty.

Just show him the videos from sunday @ 3Provinsies. Particularly if you can find one of Wimpie on that last hill. If that doesn't convince him, probably nothing ever will.
You can't heel and toe a Patrol anyway, the pedal layout is all wrong.

You are trying to convince the wrong person here.

Anyways just to ensure that this topic doesn't take a drastic turn into a discussion of manual vs auto:

The topic is:
Does anyone have or know of anyone who does have a 4.8 manual Patrol with 150 000 or less km and wants to sell?

The pros of the manual is that there are fewer electronics to go wrong and everything is manual excepts the windows and mirrors. The gearbox is a lorry gearbox and can feel a bit clunky, my clutch is one the heavy side. It's cheaper than a GRX - if you can find it . fuel abuse remains the same as GRX. You get 16 inch wheels

The cons: If you want cruise control you will have to fit it extra.if you have a big family and need 7 seaters you can not just add the extra seats. Their is also no aircon for the 2nd and 3rd row seats. I get the feeling that the climate control works better than the manual system as I find that I'm switching the AC on and off but then I run hot and Swambo cold so we constantly fight about it.

My opinion after 1.5 year ownerships - if you can afford it get a GRX - those extras like the seats and rear aircon can be fitted but is not just a bolt on as extras have been welded to the chassis. It makes offroad driving a lot easier. I don't have an opinion on towing but with a simple mod you can use the gear control and keep cruise control working with the GRX.

Maybe one of these days I can sell my GL for more than a GRX and "downgrade" to a GRX

The only disadvantage it has is that you can't push-start it when the battery is flat,
funny, you'll need plenty of horse power to give these puppies a push start and these days with electronics needing power it won't even push start if the battery is flat.
