Pieter, I posted a new topic "Iron Maiden is in my driveway" with a few pics, but seeing as we are on the engine and engine systems side of things.....

I have a MGL Avionica Stratomaster Smart Single Monitoring system in the Maiden at the moment. My concerns are that the EGT after driving back from howic and pushing slightly on the uphills never showed higher than 285deg C. Ok there is a massive intercooler on, and apparently a bigger than normal turbo, but I'm concerned that this temp is wrong. The EGT probe is fitted to the branches, where they all meet.... see pic...

Is this too far away from the Cylinder head to get an accurate reading? Do I need to drill a new hole closer to the source?

I was told that the probe broke... how the .... do you break a probe.... but moving swiftly along.... It also doesn't look in the best condition. So I will need to replace this one.... well I think all of them as the MGL has 4 channels but only one probe is connected. The rest are just loose wires hanging loose in the engine bay.

Has anyone got this system fitted, and where can I get EGT, CHT, Oil and Water temp probes. Is it agents (MGL Avionics) only or can one get these from a spares shop?

Hi Ricster,

As far as I know, as a general (rough) rule of thumb your EGT when measured post turbo, will measure about 200degrees lower than pre-turbo. So, assuming that your probe is measuring after the turbo (can`t figure out your setup from the photo), the 285 reading that you`re getting would approximate a "real" reading of ~485 degrees. From reading on the Aussie forums it seems that having the probe mounted pre-turbo is preferable as you get a more accurate reading, and don`t have to guess what the heat soak effect of the turbo is. If you elect to rather mount the probe pre-turbo on the exhaust manifold, it probably best to remove the exhaust manifold for drilling and tapping as you don`t want to risk having any of the shavings going through the turbo. I seem to remember reading somewhere that you ideally want the probe to be pre-turbo, and within 100mm of of one of the exhaust ports....but it might be worth doing some reading on the Aus Patrol site just to check that.

As far as I remember you also get two different types of thermo-couples (probes), so you would need to check that the correct type has been fitted. Unfortunately I can`t remember the technical details but I`m pretty sure it has been discussed here before (do a quick search?)...if not there will be info on the Aussie site.

Would be interested to see a more zoomed out photo of your turbo setup....it must be quite different to mine. I can`t visualize how the "branch" relates to the rest of the set up. My turbo is mounted directly to the end of the exhaust manifold, and has a single dump pipe running from the back of the turbo. I`m guessing on your system that the branch takes the place of the exhaust manifold, and you perhaps have a top mount turbo?

Thanks Ross, I'll take better photos tomorrow, time has been my biggest problem as things have gotten busy at the office, so working long hours at the moment. Unfortunatly I'm not very clued up with regards to the turbo....but I'll learn quickly.....

I reckon that's a top mount turbo setup....in fact you can see it in Rictster's post where he introduces Iron Maiden...(see pic below)

This is where the probe is fitted, pre turbo but where the branches meet up before entering the turbo.

We went to Witbank on Sunday, and the hottest I could get the EGT guage was 248 deg, so I'm sure there is something wrong with the probe.
I also have an oil cooler fitted.... not too sure about the pipes that connect to the radiator. I would have thought that they would need to be braided hose. I also see I have a bit of "sweating" from the oil hose that connects from the turbo back to the sump. Should that not also be a braided hose?

Jongosi also sweats oil from the same spot.

That's way too many hoses for my office-trained mind :rolling:
