From what I've read on the Aussie forums the cast manifold is probably still the better option, and like Michael says more cost effective and robust too.

I'll leave mine as is at the moment ( touch wood ) as it's still going strong.

I like the second pic Dustin, that looks like a winner for sure. Nice curves for air flow too !!!

This is what my branches look like ( this was taken when I did my motor rebuild about 5 years back )

Looks pretty solid.
I suppose if something works, best not fiddle with it. I've made that mistake a few times :lol:

It would be nice if the cast manifold could have each header 'pipe' curving up slightly to feed the turbo, so as to eliminate turbulence.
I mean I suppose I'm being nit picky, or it's just the OCD flaring up as usual, but in my little mind the exhaust gases just 'bumping into each other' before being taken up by the turbo impeller just means less performance, but I know it's probably marginal at best.
Still... if each header pipe curved into the turbo, but still maintained the low profile of the cast iron manifold design, that would be a winner.
Only problem I could foresee is that the converging gasses could possibly create hot spots in certain areas which could cause that area to weaken over time.

Oh whatever... I just want a damn turbo manifold to make my donkey cart go WHOOSH !!! :rolling: :layrubber:

Why don't you do your exhaust so long while you wait for the big mula to accumalete for the turbo.. Might just make a difference in performance.
3" with one freeflow box, you can always remove the freeflow box later after you got the turbo.

(P.S>would one freeflow box be enough to muffle the sound on a 4.2 n/s?)

What else can be done to improve performance on a n/a td42?

Only a straight through 3" exhaust on a N/A diesel will help at the moment.... BUT it will be as noisy as hell !! Spending the money on a small box on the exhaust in the meantime will in my opinion be a waste and better used to cover the cost of the new manifold.

We're about the same there Anthony.
We both have recently bought '98 4.2D Patrols and both have empty pockets at the moment :lol:

I'll make a plan to find a few bucks for a manifold, because believe me, there's nothing out there. I've been hunting high and low for months with no luck.
It will be worth it if we have enough guys in on the deal to all share the cost of tooling.

I'm going to slowly start building up all the parts required until I have enough to go ahead and slap the hair dryer on.
I think if one leaves it too long, the price of it all will start to sky rocket and we'll be stuck with donkey carts until retirement :oldtimer:

Life is too short to keep it stock ! :blonde:

As i have said before, i am no diesel expert.

But my theory is that what happens between the engine and the turbo has little effect at high revs, because the turbo is adjusted to deliver a specific outlet pressure.

At lower revs, gas flow will have some effect, but i don't know how much.

On the other hand, the pattern and casting process become significantly more complicated, perhaps even impossible.

Thus, if you want branches, buy branches.

I agree, with these diesel engines I honestly don't think there will be any advantage in building a branch manifold vs a cast manifold.
I would actually rather say that it is very possible to make a worse branch manifold than a original cast manifold.

The cast manifold is actually split in two parts (1,2 &3 are separated from 4,5 &6). This is the main reason why the EGT probe cannot sit where all the exhaust pipes connect to the turbo flange.

Firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4 which means there will be no interference between any of the cylinders when firing.

I'm no expert, but these manifolds were not designed by someone working from their garage. There has actually been an engineer behind it believe it or not.

And as Peter said, with turbo engines you overcome many things with the boost. If this was a N/A engine branch manifolds built correctly will be superior to a cast iron manifold I think

Hi guys

I spent the last week or so trying another angle.
I managed to find a supplier for new TD42 turbo manifolds (high mount).

I emailed and spoke to the supplier, and pushed them for a better price, etc.
The absolute best I could push them to is the manifold and shipping to SA for $330 USD.
Depending if Zuma can keep his mouth shut, that would be around R4500 and some change for a brand new high flow cast iron manifold, all gaskets and shipping to SA.
I'm told it's about R7000 if you order an original 2 piece one from Nissan/UD trucks, so R4500 is not bad.
I can't get an idea of the import duty cost, or if there will be one. If anyone has a contact in customs, this would be the time to ask them.

The secondary port with the blanking plate is for if you want to run an external waste gate, so you can really push the boost up.

They do also have a complete turbo kit (stage 1 - no intercooler) for the TD42 motor as well for $650 USD.

If anyone is interested, drop me a PM and I'll forward you the email correspondence to attach to your email as a reference for the better pricing, etc.

As for myself, I spend 2 days solid phoning every single scrap yard in PE, EL, CT, DBN and JHB...but I found 1 manifold for myself.
I'll hear more on Monday about it, and pics.
If that falls through, I'll probably order one from these guys.
