My money is on an airbox..... I say that cause, that is my next mission once I've finished my dash gauge console to house the EGT Gauges etc.

It's by no means cheap, but dare I say it will outlast the Patrol
Once I've tested it and it all works out, I can hopefully put some pressure on to bring the price down even further and maybe who ever wants one we can make a plan.

I am busy with a box to fit a flat panel filter, that will hopefully ensure that the air speed through the filter medium is very slow to create maximum efficiency through the filter as well as keep the airflow as unrestricted as possible. I want to try eliminate the cyclone effect around the filter ( even though the cyclonic action pushes the dirt particles to the outside ) to get the air speed within tolerance as it gets to the filter medium. It is quite an art and brain teaser to get the right internals to achieve the max efficiency. Also replacement filter availability and price as to be taken into account.

The benefit to an upgraded airbox will be unbelievable, in both 4.2 diesels and the 3.0 diesels...... and I believe even the petrol motors !!!!

I'm not the sharpest pencil concerning air flow dynamics, and how that influences the turbo/performance. What I do know though, is dust is bad!

In the 90's I worked at a place called NECSA (next to Hartbeespoortdam, the place that turns the water luminous ). Anyway, they developed some spin-offs from the Uraneum enrichment process, which was done through centrifugal forces (spinning at EXTREMELY high velocities caused an electron to split from the atom - old tech, but spectacular I thought). One of the spin-offs (excuse the pun ) was dust filtration on engines - Flosep I believe the subsidiary was called. Sorry, I don't know whether they still exist, but give it a go...Google is your friend! One of my tractors, a 1994 Fiatagri still runs with one of there pre-cleaners (the original).

I recognise those parts...

I musty be honest, that particular housing is not designed to optimise airflow through or around the filter. I did spend some time ensuring that the areas work out such that the major restriction is either the filter element itself, or the tubing between the filter and the engine/turbo.

I could have done a lot more to try and get a nice even velocity distribution around the filter element, but that would have increased the cost quite substantially, and it already seems a little exorbitant...

If it wasn't for you guys getting hold of a plastic OME air box and getting all the measurements accurately, I'd still be twiddling my thumbs trying to get the mounting points sorted
Not an easy job at all without having a sample to work from.
I've been scouring every possible source for a second hand plastic box with no luck at all.
They're scarcer than hen's teeth.

The grade 304 stainless steel air box is quite pricey, but hopefully while making the sample they are going to do a time and motion study to see exactly how long it takes and material used.
I'm hoping it brings the price down significantly.
I fought the guys down a lot ! I put the hurt on them big time.
On the flip side, the stainless steel air box will last forever with no cracking, warping or broken clips.

Let's see where it lands up.

I must just say that i think anything will be more efficient than the ZD30 airbox. The air speeds around that filter are ridiculous, almost to the point of it actually not filtering the air properly.
