Hi Guys,

I didn't see Peter's commentary and by chance stumbled onto this on both gumtree and OLX. I spoke to both Johannes and Peter at the dealership and made them an offer of 55k on the SWB and they rejected saying they'll go for 57k cash. So, if you go for it, press them a little bit harder! Oh yes, they told me over the phone that it has 289 000 km on the clock.

I was pretty excited about it until reading Peters review. I don't think I have the mechanical mettle or know-how to fix an engine that seems to be prone to overheat. I was really excited about a SWB and didn't even realise they exist in SA. But alas, I am going to spend 55k for something that might need a new diff, an engine done and some other stuff. It's a beautiful paint job. Love it, but I can't fork out that cash AND then do repairs as well. Thanks Peter, disappointing but rather safe than sorry.

Do they come around in diesel as well?

Johann, this is actually the first petrol-engined shorty I have seen. The 4.2 diesel and 2.8l diesels are comparatively common.
It is also the first one I see with a rear locker, all the others I have seen have had LSD's. Unfortunately, it also doesn't have the rear sway-bar disconnect system that most shorties seem to have.

I strongly suspect that this car was a private import, and thus getting spares from Nissan might be even more tricky than usual.

If I had the money, I would get a compression test and an oil analysis done. If they did not show up any major problems, I reckon an additional R10k could turn it into a reliable set of wheels.

I am bitterly dissapointed that I can't afford this car...

In addition to Mr Connan's points:

- The roof, bonnet and fenders needs respray as the clear coat is peeling. Roof has one mark to the metal.
- Aircon she no cool no more.
- Rear is sagging.
- Front bumper dented.
- I could also smell it heating up while idling.
- Like Peter said, the engine is not smooth. I couldn't pick up or spend more time figuring out why, but it is not as smooth as a lady of negotiable virtue in a zinc bath of Jersey cream. It idles rough-ish and picks up OK, but not 100% smooth. Might be mixture?

I made no bones about the fact that they are off with their pricing. I said to him that the normal SW sells for the same price with extras, everything working, good paint and working aircon. I offered R40k cash on the spot, given that there is so much still to be done. He took my number and said he'll speak to the manager.

My thinking is they are in that at least R50k and they didn't do their homework or had an unrealistic expectation of re-sale price. We should keep an eye and hopefully they'll drop their price, but as it stands there it is vastly over priced. In this instance, rarity will bite you severely.

Alex is the lucky winner of this jackpot.

It is interesting how many long-time forumites have recently become multiple-Patrol owners...

I have had a look and a short drive though.
The engine is a TB42 4.2l petrol engine with carburettor. 4wd and low range works, and there are no horrible noises underneath. Nor are there any signs of bumps and scrapes underneath. Suspension and exhaust appear to be standard. However:

Interior has been re-done, but not exceptionally well. The driver's door lining particulalrly is a bit of a mess. The interieo roor handle is not attached to the door itself.
The passenger window doesn't work.
The windscreen washer spray doesn't work.
The earial does not retract fully.
The diff lock solenoid only creates vacuum in one direction, and the tubes are buggered. I thus do'nt know if there is anything wrong with the diff itself.
The engine has a miss, and there are several oil leaks. I did not see any smoke though.
A couple of water hoses have been patched, and the overflow bottle is broken at the corners, although it still holds water.
The coil is the wrong size for it's bracket.
The oil pressure seems a little bit low at idle, and i felt the temperature climbed very quickly. I suspect it will get hot if asked to work hard.
There are several little dents and places where the clear coat is wearing through.

I would suggest a compression test to make sure the miss is not something serious, and the car will need some love before it could be relied upon, but i still would love to own it.

I have been off the forum for a while, Now, after having bought it, I am reading everyone else's comments!
All the comments are true, except I am not convinced the engine is off.
I drove 30+ km from Kempton to the West of town back home, incl 15 km or so on the high way. No overheating, and runs smooth when cruising.
But the radiator overflow is broken, so it may just be that while the radiator itself is full, it is still managing the temps well.
Will definitely need to keep a hawk-eye on the temp gauge until the date with Graham, week after next.

Idling is a bit uneven though.
But otherwise runs very nicely in traffic too.
Suspension is sagging a bit at the back.

Still need to check fuses for the non working electr window and aircon.
Aircon worked when Pete saw it.

Definitely much more manoeuvrable in traffic than the big lifted 33" GU of mine.

Some TLC needed, but first priority is to sort out the issues under the bonnet.

Congratulation Alex

I am glade that the Shorty was bought by a Forum Member.

For how much did they let the Shorty go ? (if I may ask)

Sagging suspension:
If there is any need or interest I have got a set of 4.5 coils+ springs; 4.8 coils+ spring and Iron man springs.
