For me an EGT gauge is a good indication that the previous owner didn't really know the implications of what an aftermarket turbo can do to the egt's..... I think it would be a chance you take with that motor....... It could still be perfect, but it could be a problem child. However all is not lost !!! Seeing that the motor is still running, I would buy it, and leave it with Frans to take the head off and have a look at the internals ( condition of the pistons and sleeves ). I know Frans will be straight up with you and tell you exactly what the conditions are like. If all is good with the motor, its just a matter of the cost of putting in a new genuine Nissan head gasket and Frans's time/labour. This will be a MINOR cost for the piece of mind you will get !!!!!!!

I would then get him to fit either a Madman or just an EGT gauge and let him give it a tune-up. You will be VERY happy ....I know I was and still am with the work he did on mine when I was there !!!

The other option is to let him while the motor is open to fit new big end bearings and rings and even new (Alfin type) pistons for you. Then you basically have a brand new motor!!

I would suggest discussing all these options with Frans, cause that man knows his stuff when it comes to the 4.2 turbo diesel motors !!!

Fanus, the intercooler just makes the very hot air coming from the turbo cooler which allows you to make more power. Obviously the cooler the air, the denser it becomes. In return your EGT's will be slightly lower so there are benefits from having an intercooler.

Just to put you at ease, you dont NEED an intercooler on a turbo diesel.....its just better. The Australians run their TD42's mostly without intercoolers.
Another fact not many people are aware of is that the UD40 trucks that were running with thr TD42 engine did not have an intercooler until it was discontinued in 2013 (not 100% sure about the date).
having no intercooler also has no effect on the turbo whatsoever.

Not having an EGT monitor is not ideal, so its anyone's guess how high the EGT's were running on that engine. You saw on your engine how quickly the EGT's can climb.

Hi Guys
I have a question regarding all this turbo intercoolers egt etc
if you run a pipe straight from the turbo to intake, you have less resistance on airflow and a more effective turbo performance ? albeit hotter air
if you re-route the piping to go through a intercooler and bends and joins and cores etc your changes of losing turbo pressure at joint and distance is greater and therefor the turbo is working harder and then runs hotter???
I'm just asking the question

ek ry n petrol job en dit wil net vars petrol he dan loop hy :rolling: :rolling:

Good point Errol

The turbo will be more responsive without all the long pipes and cooler.....true
You will loose a bit of pressure with all the plumbing and intercooler and I think its around 0.1bar
For this reason I have my waste gate read the pressure from the intake manifold and not the turbo compressor housing to counter that.
I dont think the turbo really runs hotter and the EGT is basically what heats the turbo up...... so lower EGT's from the intercooler should actually make your turbo run cooler.

So I think adding the intercooler have much more pros than cons on a diesel engine. Im not 100% sure on the numbers, but I read somewhere that for every 11 degrees drop in intake temp you gain 1% power because of more oxygen in the the denser air.
