Patrol 4.8 engine import
Hi, I need some help. Just over a year ago, my radiator burst on my 4.8 GRX and cooked the engine. I had it fix the best I could at the time, but it is still not 100%. I still need to replace the cylinder head, as the one currently on were skimmed way beyond the specs and a special stainless steel gasket fitted to compensate for the 4mm skimmed off the head and block. There are still a couple of things that needs to be done, but the prices from the agents for parts are obviously very expensive.
Now instead of spending another R40 000 for parts, does anyone know of a company that can or will import a TB48DE engine from Japan or perhaps know someone that would like to sell one?
I would rather buy a complete engine that works and give it a quick overhaul, than fix the current one.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Patrol 4.8 engine import
Hi Jacques
As far as I know the 4.8 is quite expensive to import and I have not seen any ones for sale second hand. Mainly because they are generally very reliable.
However, there are a few 4.5s around (http://www.patrol4x4.co.za/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=2573)
It is a simpler engine, reliable, but not quite as much oemf.
Alternatively you can go to the dark side and get a lexus V8 for R5,500. And, believe me, plenty of oemf. I made mince meat of the sand dunes in the Kalahari. Second hand parts very readily available and cheap. Total cost of engine plus installation however can set you back more than R40,000
Note that once you have imported the 4.8, you still need to check how much for installation etc.
Also consider Freakazoid (Pierre Becker) who may be prepared to get rid of his VH45 V8 (a Nissan Infinity engine, also with plenty of oemf), for a good price.
See http://www.patrol4x4.co.za/viewtopic.php?f=65&t=2756
Cheers

Re: Patrol 4.8 engine import
Die 4.8 enjin by Toysan is 'n hartseer storie.

Petrol kos geld, tyd kos niks as jy op vakansie is nie, so 100km/h het lekker vir my gewerk.
