Congrats Peter, glad to hear that you`re making progress!

I think a 4.5 in a GQ will be a very nice drive.

Good Luck with the installation.

Ja.

Well chaps, I can confidently report that old man Murphy still loves me...

The 4.5 motor arrived on Monday evening. It has obviously been standing idle in the see air for a while, as there is a fair amount of surface rust, but I guess nothing too serious.

The bad news is that the 4.2's intake manifold does not fit onto the 4.5 head. Fortunately the ports line up, but they are rather different in shape and size and the bolting is compltely different. Furthermore the 4.2's thermostat is part of the manifold, but on the 4.5 it is a seperate component. So I will have to grind off the thermostat housing and make an adapter flange to fit between the engine and the manifold.

Another concern is the distributor: that of the 4.5 does not have a vacuum advance, so I need to adapt the 4.2's dizzy to fit. Fortunately the nose of the casting of the dizzy bodies are the same, but the gearing is toatally different, and the timing adjustment bolt's spacing is a couple of mm different. But I will probably be able to transfer the gear across and modify to fit.

The other small issue I have noticed is that the 4.2 has a small bleeder pipe between the top of the radiator and the top of the thermostat housing, while the 4.5 doesn't. As this is probably a useful feature, I will have a look at building this in.

I can also report that the clutches are the same, that Nissan's price for a clutch is not much more than the pirates. My clutch plate was actually still in remarkably good condition, but the thrust/release bearing was on it's last legs.
Mag ons ons kenniskry met lekkerkry aanhoukry.
