GQ options

Post by Peter Connan »

Right, so I have finally managed to break my (GQ 4.2 Petrol) Trollie...

The cylinder head is cracked on the top, between one of the head bolts and one of the taper plugs into the water gallery, and here the water comes out to mix with the oil.

Now I have some options, and any advice will be appreciated:

1) Repair cylinder head by impregnation.
2) Replace cylinder head (anybody know where I can find one?)
3) Replace engine with 4.5 Petrol
4) Replace engine with 4.2 Diesel (probably N/A).

Any assistance with finding bits and relevant info will be appreciated.
Mag ons ons kenniskry met lekkerkry aanhoukry.

Ai tog Piet.

I always thought that I would replace my GQ's motor with a TD42T, when the time comes.

Bad luck there Peter, sorry to hear of your troubles. I hope you find the right engine soon - cheapest could be (and no insult meant to anyone here) a Lexus V8!!

Thanks Gents

Chris, I am going to state this hard and fast:

If I do change engines, it will be for an engine factory-built into a Patrol. No Lexus's or any other stuff.

I do not have any particular problem with the lexus engine per se, except that in my opinion it is not the correct engine for a rock-crawling Patrol The Patrol's low range is too high, and the Luxus's bottom-end torque is not enough.

Furthermore, while the lexus engine is cheap, the conversion is not. A good conversion costs more than my car is worth, thus if that were the only option, I would rather buy a second Patrol, and strip one of the two for spares...

Furthermore, I still want a simple engine, particularly in terms of the electrics/electronics. I have had lots of problems in the past with aftermarket ECU's, and would prefer to stear clear of that.

Peter I know that David had a complete 4.2 Petrol motor when I visitid him in Aug, might be worth a try to give him a call.

Peter

I am very sorry to hear.

I know I won't change your mind on the Lexus.
But do bear in mind:
The Spitronix can be given a different (more rich mix) setting to give you more immediate response at the lower end,
Mine is set to be more lean for traffic economy.
Yet, it is still a far simpler engine and set up than the TB4.8.

It is a hell of a strong engine, which is partly why it is the most common (by far) engine replacement done for the taxis. They (the taxi drivers) just can't seem to manage to break that thing, even when badly neglected.

As always, I respect your opinion and I know it is futile to try and change your mind, but I also do not think that the Lexus has been given a fair representation on this forum.
