Russ not a bad motor at all but .......diff rasios . Speedo temp senders ext always give hassles

In the Kalahari my Lexus was running circles around everyone, inlcuding the 4.8s
Thats because the Lexus only comes to its own above 4500 revs. This is where the 4.2D starts to shoot its pistons out of the box!
On the other side, at Koos se klim, I found that there was a very fine line between too little and too much revs, while the 4.2 was crawling up there, seemingly comfortably.
I had to massage the pedal very carefully up there. That makes the Lexus a bit of a bliksem on steep rocks.
Lana, who held the video camera, almost dropped the camera at the most critical point, when the front wheels strated to lift up!
So as you say, there is no perfect engine for everything.
But I love mine on the open road.

Oupa Mac,
Drove the Troll and got 165km/hr on the GPS. It is goign like a bliksim these days and after test driving a 4.8 (


The rear seat cover are complete but the fron is missing two sections as a previuos troll owner want to see if they fit, and then sold the patrol with out removing the seat covers. You are more than welcom to have them and then as Utuli to make up the missing sections.

Ok guys, choices, choices
I drove my ZD30 for quite a while, Me and the wife, she used it as her everyday car. Consumption was much of a muchness between the 4,2N & the ZD30. The 30L was a better towcar while it went. The 4,2 I maintain, the towing exp is the same as the 4,5 GRX. I must admit I towed a trol SW on a car trailer this weekend from Cape to Bela Bela with my 4,2TDI and that was a very pleasant experience compared to the 4,2 D. I tow 5 hours from JHB to Swazi with the 4,2 /Pzazz. I stop at Alzu for coffee and have the boarder to cross, this to me is exceptable =/- 380km . Tow speed +/- 90 to 100/h. The diffs between the 4,5 & the 4,2 is fuel I do not tow with the 4,5 any more. I tow to Durban, south coast, Drakensberg , Eastern Transvaal ens. The 4,2 runs fine on the open road.
My first choice would be the 4,2 tdi (Ldv motor), then 4,2 N unless you can pick up the UD40 motor 4,2 Turbo. I also run a UD 60 , 6 tonner and I think that might make a great conversion if you can fit it into the Patrol.
Look what ever you do you must be able to support it close to you and must not do too much of a conversion try as stay as std as possible. Having said that, In my humble opinion before I do a Lexus conversion I will go for Nissan's VQ motors the 5L V8 or the 5,6L V8. Lets not kid ourselves but nissan can build a V motor.
In conclusion, having driven both motors in the same vehicle for a while, I will stick with the 4,2D conversion.
