Patrol Fuel burn....

Hi All
I am the proud owner of a '03 4.8GRX, what a car..... but the fuel burn, eish..
Most of the travelling is long distance and sometimes with a trailer
The advertised fuel burn on the side is expected but I don't even get that, and, no, I do not have a heavy foot. Travelling is at a very sedate 100-110km/h
4.2-4.5km/l is the norm
Can somebody give some advise and not driving it is not an option

I bought it from a Nissan dealer, not necessary a good thing, she has 200k on the clock, Burnco bumpers front and back, snorkel, 33' tyres, Ironman suspension

Any suggestion would be appreciated

When towing rather use the tiptronic and stay in 4 I get 5.5. 6 on the highway doing 115 on gps with loaded car and roof rack
Try pumping your tires to 2.5 or so and remove the cat.
The cat removal snorkel and chip made a big diff on mine !!!!also check your km to the GPS

O yes on sand in LR I still get 2 km per liter

But nothing can compare to the 4.8 when driving on sand !!!!!

The speedo and GPS are within 2% due to the bigger tyres
On the highway I run the tyres at 2.8 and tow mostly in 4th but it does not make any difference, I tried both gears
She has a 63mm s/s freeflow exhaust and thus no cat

Van der Linde and Mouse advise against a chip as they say "its not worth the money" as it makes very little difference

Sand driving I get 3.5 but this was done on the westcoast all the way in H

Get your car on a 4-gas analiser and see if everything is correct? Could be a dirty MAF or similar causing a rich mixture.

Store the 33" tyres for ruff riding [OFF ROADING I mean .. eisjjj, Arries, jy darem ook]

Then get 32" inch H/T tyres for the road trips -- makes BIG diff on the consumption.
Over many miles I have found that the best consumption on A/T's I got was on Bridgestone duellers [again learnt that recently when I opted for Coopers and the Prado's consumption went the wrong way

I have heard about the 4 gas before, do you know where it can be done in Cape Town?

While on the subject, any suggestions on spark plugs? I am sure Nissan did not replace them on the 195k service
When I checked the air filter it was clogged and so was the fuel filter
The clean filters did little to improve the fuel consumption

Die 33" is BF Goodridge en hulle doen goed, baie lekker tyres

33' make hardly any differance on a 4.8. Make sure the cam sensors angle is correct and meke sure the MAF is clean. You can also find that your O2 sensors are on their way out. Also check your rims temperature some distance as you might have some brake drag. I get a good average of 18.3l/100km or 5.4km/l.

Will clean the MAF as soon as I get home again
Rim temp is good, on a long drive the get to 40 deg, and all are the same

Where is the O2 sensor and how can I check it?

Will old/warn plugs make a big difference?

Worn plugs will make a differance. The O2 sensors are on the outlet branches. You should have two them.
