I called Snowmaster today.
They have anew model 60ltr fridge/freezer - stainless, 2 speed setting, cover, etc
Helluva bargain on special till end month - R 5500

Question is though, is 60ltr big enought/right size for overlanding -- what advice out there?

I guess opinions on this will vary very much.

All I can say is, I think it is just about the ideal size. The four of us can operate out of ours easily for two weeks.

However, in my old model, the freezer is 45l and the fridge is 15l, and I beleive this ratio is not ideal.

Chris... I took the 80L single door ..... it is friggin huge. Looking at it now, I should have gone for the 60L. I have outback drawer system in the back and when the fridge is in its a little tight to open the lid and get a drink out. also the positioning of the fridge needs to be more in the middle as it catches on the door and bodywork around the door when you want to slide it out to use.

BUT...

I load up everything into the fridge now.... so it gets used for the tin cans and all other stuff that may have been in a ammo box either in the back, next to the fridge, or on the roof rack.

But that's a good price for a 60L and well worth it !!

Chris, you can pack a lot in a 60L and it not too big for overland. Mine was a 60L and I easily coped for 4 weeks, two people.

I think 60L is the ideal size.

take your patrollie to them put it in and test ......the thing is you waste battery power when you open and close all the time
make sure you can open the lid when it is inside the back . i went for the same tipe off drawer system as Peter c it works well and it stores a lot you are welcome to come and have a look !

Looking at a Fridge / Freezer, what do you guys normally put into these units? Am planning for the future and normally was not gone for long times at a time, so used cooler box with frozen foods and ice. But if you have this type of Fridge/Freezer what did you find works for longer stays in the bush? Also is it necessary from the start to have extra battery system or will the standard battery work as long as you watch the voltage ect? Thanks

R, I guess with good discipline you can even use coolboxes for relatively long periods.

Where a fridge/freezer becomes invaluable is when you travel accross borders where you are not allowed to import meat. You then usually have to buy your meat unfrozen, and the ability to freeze it becomes essential if you don't want to spend half your holiday eating canned food.

However, we use it for all the things you would normally have in you fridge and freezer at home, as well as quite a lot of water for drinking.

You can get by without a dual battery if you camp in places with 220v power, but if you camp in places where there is no power available, I would recommend a dual battery system.

I agree with Peter there. A dual battery is definitely a piece of mind issue, if there is no external power source..... but if you are driving each day and in the evenings open and close the fridge as little as possible, and possibly disconnect the power say at 22h00 before going to sleep, and starting the car in the morning, and then reconnecting the power... it can be done without the extra battery. ( just an opinion though).

A good quality fridge if managed and run correctly will keep your meat frozen (wrap the meat in newspaper and pack at the bottom, and cover again with newspaper)and your drinks cold !!
