You were lucky, beleave me. Why did you replace the head gasget?Open a zd30 that is still running, I can guarentee the head is cracked. But nevermind them
Not to sure about the above qoute I just had the head gasket and other gaskets replaced on my 3.0 patrol to sort out an oil leak. The head was not cracked.

Re: Fix 3.0 L TD in 2004 model, or replace engine?
I had a leak between the the timing chain cover and the head and the motor was overheating. My mechanic decided to replace upper and lower gasket as well as a couple of o rings and other gaskets well he had the motor out.We also had the radiator flushed and thermostat and water pump replaced.
He did mention though that the engine had been worked on before and I have only had the car for 6 months so Im not sure of the history.
I'm following the patrol REF guide and i have installed an oil catch can, snorkel and tomorrow a EGT gauge. I can't afford the petrol so i will rather look after the diesel.
Some of the Aussie patrol owners have managed to clock up 350K on their 3.0 litres by monitoring the temps and changing oils every 7k with full synthetic and using good quality diesel.
If my patrol goes bang I will probarbly look at going the 4.2TD route or try source a 3.0 from Japan auto.
It's a real pitty that these engines and parts are so damm expensive if they were not i would look at importing a brand new engine.

Hello pdasilva
Understood. Also those engine's do not have a overheat problem. If they overheat, someting's wrong.
The most of them I saw open, had cracked heads. The cracks showed between the injector hole and the valve seat. Note that most aluminium diesel head engine's crack heads.
They burn hole's in the piston as we all know. The mods you planning are good. The oil catch can will keep the intercooler clean.
I also agree with a snorkel on a diesel. The egt will change your driving style.
I would blank off the egr to. It will keep the hot recircle exhaust heat/gasses out of the engine. If you do that your engine wont be GREEN no more. Dont feel bad, there are a lot off engines running without a egr. I also wil remap the ecu. The cheapst way is to chip the engine.Use the chip for your engine to keep the egt's down and set the timeing, not to chase horspower.
Reason for that is when you blank the egr off, PM (partucalate matter) go up. More danger gasses. Or unburned fuel. The chip can set the injection timeing to get rid of the PM. By doing that the cylinder pressure will go up. Again the tuner then uses the chip to cut back the fuel. The cylinder pressure will come down with the egt.All that will make the engine more efficent without losing power. This will increase engine life. But still would the driving style and service intefalls play a huge part to. Restricted or dirty air filters will make the egt's higher. Freeflow exhaust's help with the cooler egt's to.
Anyway just a thought from me.

Hi Frans.
Thanks for the great advice.
Where would be the best place to have the EGR blocked ? Should I get SAC to do it.
I had my EGT gauge installed yesterday at SAC Boksburg so I will be keeping an eye on the temps.

Hi pdasilva
You're welcome. Speak to SAC, they would be able to do the job. Chip and mapping too.

Check this link below.
Maybe this could be a option for us ZD30 owners , just wondering how much shipping would be.

Thats about 60 K fo rthe motor excluding the shipping and it has no waterpump . manifolds , turbo or such stuff , ad in the recon of your injector pump , new VNT turbo and a waterpump and look at that price again and on that weight and size probably 30 or 40% shipping charges

WOW that is allot , I thought it would be less at about 35K. x5 is it not for AUS to RSA currency?
Well there doesn't seem to be any cheap alternative for us ZD30 owners then.
