If the original Patrol gearbox is retained, no speedo correction would be required, but the overall gearing might not suit the engine perfectly; If a petrol motor, with a sligthly wider rev range and which develops peak torque at a higher engine speed is matched to a driveline intended for a diesel, the gear ratios might not be a perfect match. The vehicle might feel as though the gearing is too tall.JG Shields wrote:3. The ZD30 engine runs at slightly lower revs at same speeds than the V8 Lexus engine. Interesting though is that the difference is less that the difference between a straight six petrol engine (4.5 of 4.8 but also keep in mind the variations between standard manual and auto configurations) and the ZD30. This should results in a marginal overreading of the speedo, but not nessecarily more that a change in tyre size can also cause. This can be corrected (1) by changing diff ratios if it proofs to be required. I do not think that Kobus thought that it was nessecary and (2) through a calibration procedure done by VR instruments. However, I have not seen such procedure done yet and can therefore not comment of the success thereof.

You could also look at getting a complete low KM motor from Japan auto. I have been told that these motors have between 50 000 and 80 000km on them and sell fur under 20K.

Re: Fix 3.0 L TD in 2004 model, or replace engine?
Good Day
You guys covered all the pros and cons.
For what its worth, here are some input.
Pieter and JG has firsthand experiance on both a ZD30 and convertion or a transplant, and the moneys to make it work again.
I think Pieter and JG will aggree if I say: never mind if you get a ZD30 for free, do not use it again.
Open a zd30 that is still running, I can guarentee the head is cracked. But nevermind them.
The Lexus and 4.2 diesel will work nice in a Patrol. If the patrol was a auto, the diff ratio's are 4.3:1. That will give the 4.2 its pulling power because of the smaller rev range the engine make its power at.It can rev more frequent but is not economical. The lexus will like the same diff ratio, because off the little torque the Lexus has at low rpm. But it come very allive at the top. The diff ratio will help with that.
I will fit a Lexus v8 to any car any day. Just because off the cheap price. They are powerfull and reliable. They are a lot off power for the money you pay.
The only thing I do not like on the lexus, the management system. Its not accurate... Even the one I use in my car I must tweak every now and then. For me its no trouble at all. I start my laptop and tune my car. I even display the laptop screen on my radio, now I can see live wile I drive what is happening and I can change the tuneing. But because a aftermarket system need attention, it will cost the normal guy on the street money to start a laptop and tune!
However I will recomend a lexus in a Patrol. But I like the 4.2 diesel.
I guess if money was no problem You can fit any engine you like. But for that reason buy a 4.8
Cheers

Does the Lexus V8 Conversion work with a Manual Gear Box? Not that I need one, but planning for future eventualities

Unkredible, Yes is will. If your car is a 3.0 manual the diff ratio's are 4.1:1. Whitch the car will have longer legs. The get up and go wont be as quick as the 4.3's but still better than a ZD30.

Roy (Dieselfan), the conversion was done, but from what I understand there are still a few small teething issues.
Mag ons ons kenniskry met lekkerkry aanhoukry.

Why would you put a Toyota engine in a Nissan and recommend that. Does not say much for Nissan. Has anybody looked at installing a Infinity V8. Two suppliers have indicated that they are looking at bringing in these engines as they they have had numerous requests.
Gents, I am not criticizing any body that has fitted a Lexus in their Troll, I will not put any Toyota product in mine.
Proudly Nissan

Grant you can laready get teh Infinity 4.1 litre engine here its a VH41 and its about 11k for the motor alone
Thats why the gusy run Lexus its dirt cheap
I worked out if i do the VH41 with a decent Halltech management system and adapters im looking at probably 35k to 45 k but i must agree im very much a purist in that sense and feel that the make of engine in your conversion should be of the same make as the car albeit not always economical

Agree
I am a Nissan fan, currently have the Troll, Navara and a Qashqai. Love the brand and with all the new models, it will be a success.
