EGT Gauge gone funny

Post by davejones »

Driving to Onca yesterday on the freeway having just left home (maybe 5km into journey), next thing the EGT guage needle shoots up from about 350deg to about 900deg in like a fraction of a second. Naturally I crap myself and pull over in the yellow lines. While idling the engine, the needle was showing as is in the attached picture. I let it idle for a while, switch off the trol, start her again a minute or so later, idling temp still showing around 500deg, think it must be the sensor, everything else with trol seems A-okay so pull off again, then needle drops back to normal, but for the rest of the trip it bounces around (like my old city golf's rev counter needle!).

Should I be worried? I intend taking jongosi to Alpine Developments anyway for the weeping oil around the turbo /sump connection and clearly now something isnt right with the EGT.

Thanks !!

Hi Dave , I am 101 % sure its a thermo couple problem, had excactly the same. Also jumped from 200 - 900 deg .
Got n moerse skrik.
Found the problem to be the thermo couple wiring which I tied in a loop and cable tied it to the brake pipes on the fire wall to have shaved through and made a short with the earth.
I checked the wiring and covered the area with insulation tape and voila!

Dont worry , @ 900 + deg there would have been nothing left .

So its the coupling my friend.

An after thought.....

My EGT gauge also did smething funny the other day. I was driving like usual and as usual when stopping I let my car idle for a minute or so to let the turbo cool down. I normally watch the EGT's and when it gets to around 150 I switch off....

Well this time my EGT's started to drop extremely fast - so I kept the engine running to see what happens. Within about 2 - 3 minutes I got a reading of -8 (yes minus 8 degrees!! :surprised: ) on my EGT monitor - much too my surprise but knowing it is impossible!!

I just switched off the car and since then it has not happen again - so yes like uncle Mac said - seems like the devil is messing with us!!!

Maybe we must arrange a MMC weekend for our Patrols and get rid of the evil......
