Hi Ricster,
It sounds like you may need to put a new set of glow plugs on your shopping list!!! Mine also need doing, and in the cold weather I also have to do Stephans' trick of waiting to hear the "click" of the solenoid disengaging (about 10 seconds after the glow plug light goes out). I actually do that twice on cold mornings before cranking the motor, then she starts very easily. SRXy replaced his glow plugs (NGK glow plugs from an after market reseller - Midas I think?), if I remember correctly it cost him around R1000 to do all six, and made a big difference to early morning cold starts!!! Its not a very difficult job to replace them apparently....I`ve been meaning to do mine since last winter and still hav`nt gotten around to it yet!!!

Yep,
I replaced the 6 in my truck (I got them from Tonneson's Midas in Claremont). Be careful when you get them though as there are both 24V and 12V versions on the market. The cold starting performance difference was substantial. It doesn't take more than 3s for my glow plug light to go out and to hear the "click". The engine starts immediately....without lugging (unless my battery is a bit pap after sitting for a week or two...I'm on two wheels 95% of the time).
I think I paid ~R600 for the set and I bought a little plug spanner to do the job. These guys have a reputation for snapping off when you try to take them off with a spanner....it took me about an hour of swearing and climbing into my engine bay to get to the one at the back. The Patrol workshop manual shows how it's done...it's very simple....even I could do it...
I cant fit the Patrol into the garage yet with the roof rack on.
Another problem we will need to address down the line...mine barely fits without the roof racks! I may have to end up getting the caravan roll up doors...
Langman, I only have the standard height garage opening, 2440mm x 2135mm, so I need to build new garages before I can fit the Maiden in with the roof rack. Either that or cut two trenchs into the floor for the tyres to run in.... hmmm... that won't look very good
I think if the patrol is in a garage the warm up time, if any ca be reduced too. Like Frans said to me with keystone pistons, you don't want extended idle times, as that will glaze the sleeves...
