Ngumula Lodge - Mozambique

Post by fralanti » 19 Feb 2019 20:39

This is not a real trip report, but I would like to tell you about Ngumula Lodge near Inhambane in Mozambique (www.ngumulalodge.co.za) that we visited this month.

My wife and I don't usually go where the crowds are and always look for more secluded, but comfortable places to stay during our break-aways. Ngumula Lodge offered just that without being so far away from civilization that it becomes uncomfortable. So, if you like something similar, do yourself the favor and visit the place. It's been a while since we came back from a 10 day holiday so well rested and satisfied.

There's too much to mention (you have to experience it yourself to appreciate it), but here are some highlights.

Right from the time you go over the last dune, you realize that this place is special.

Frans awaits you there and show you to your house.

Each house has its own pool on the deck and by that time you cannot decide if you want to fall into the pool or go down to the beach first.

A very well-equipped kitchen (my wife can get quite fussy about that) and a covered braai at the back. The ice maker was a real treat for me!

We enjoyed waking in the morning with a view like this from the bedroom (fortunately the morning view was not spoiled with that white thing in the foreground).

We snorkeled in the very shallow reef in front of the house and we are sure we saw more in this reef than anywhere else in SA.

Guinjata Bay is 20 minutes away and have a lovely beach for swimming, more than one dive centre, small shop with most things you will need and restaurants.

And you can also recover the other vehicles with your Patrol if you want to...

We traveled in the area during our 10 days there and looked at quite a few other places, but each time we returned to Ngumula we realized that the place offers real value for money. You will have to fork out much much more money elsewhere (if you find something close) to even get close to what this place offers. And all staff went out of their way to make our stay pleasurable.

Really affordable. I usually camp, but at the rates here it did not make sense to tow a caravan to Moz.

He was the dagga boy.... the brick man.....haha.... That really looks like a nice place.

I haven't been up to Inhambane in many years, last time was just after the Chinese redid the EN1. How many hours to get there from JHB/PTA nowdays?

People told me 8 hours from Komatipoort to Inhambane, but we did it in 9hrs. However, that included a stop for petrol (with the 4.8 you have to include a stop for petrol  ) and something to eat. I don't know how long it will take you from Pretoria to Komatipoort.

Pretoria to Komatipoort is roughly 4-5 hours depending on traffic. (And then you have to get through the border.)
May the road be long.. and dirty.
