Hey guys I got a few questions for you I'm brand new to the patrol world just purchased a 1998 Td42 non turbo Gu patrol and I'm stoked she's a Beauty first question more power!! She is a NA TD4.2 I'm looking for any crazy numbers or to be king of the dunes I'm looking to take my touring trips up to Botswana Namibia Zim and that's just the beginning so I'm just looking for some overtaking power and just a little more goo out of the big girl what are your guys thoughts and opinions on turboing the current engine and keeping the boost down and upgrading the cooling she's got a 360000 on the clock or I've been looking at the Td42 turbo engines to swop in I don't if that would be cheaper I assume it should bolt right up to the transmission no worries and engine mounts are the same for the na and turbo versions of the engine another option I've been looking at the possibility of a 1HDT but I haven't seen any patrols with this swop so I believe this would be a pain with some fab work needed I'm also considering a Isuzu 4JJY as I can see it's slowly becoming a popular conversation in Aus so there parts already made for the conversion or possibly a Toyota 3.0 D4D could guys please share your knowledge and thoughts to me

Welcome Ross
There are many of us who have done the TD42 turbo route. The engine suits the car really well and as you said it does bolt right in. The engine is not without fault but providing you keep it cool (which has more to do with driving within the system's limits than with upgrading the cooling system) it should prove reasonably reliable.
The knowledge of the person doing the mods is critical, and you would need to search very far to find a better option than Michael at Sojo Automotive. A bit far from you but worth it.

I don't know of anybody locally who have fitted either of the other two engines you are considering. I know the FTE is a great engine but is very expensive locally.

Several guys have done or are doing other conversions. BMW M57, Merc OM605/606 and Cummins BT6's have all been done locally. Each have pros and cons of course. Personally I would shy away from anything with an ECU, but I am a bit of a dynosaur when it comes to these things. It's not the ECU itself that scarea me but the quality of the installation and the reliability of the connections. Certainly possible to get it reliable but I have seen and experienced many issues.

One thing to keep in mind with all conversions is that the cost of the engine is generally a very small part of the cost. Radiators, exhausts and such things add up really quickly.

What Piet said....a td42t upgrade will be your most reliable option for overlanding no mods and factory specks. Every one can work on it

Welcome to the Patrol Family !!,

Yeah the TD42 is a beast, and with the correct turbo addition with big intercooler, will give you more than enough oomph for an overtake. But, Its no race car. Its a 3 ton brick shaped marvel of engineering. In mine I have driven at 150km/h. Does it feel nice?... no its not designed for those speeds, but at 120 - 130km/h it purrs like a kitten with big kahunas   I've had mine for over 10 years, I did Atlantis Dunes ( TD42 is not really designed for long high dunes, so it did sound like the valves were about to climb out the motor when pushing it hard up the dunes. but I did have loads of fun. I have traveled around Moz on the soft beach sand, and the anual Patrol Forum river trip with ease. The TD42 is in my opinion the rock crawling beast, and general off road adventure beast, with fairly good fuel consumption for what a Patrol is.

With diff ratio changes I believe the TD42 capabilities becomes even better. I cannot vouch for this, as I still have to do this one day.

So in a nutshell you wont be king of the dunes in a TD42, but as a general all rounder, you will have a smile on every adventure.
