Patrol 4.8 De-Catting real world consumption

Post by ra_01 »

Good day, by removing the catalytic converter, have any one noticed decrease in fuel consumption, if so by how much?
My car is out of warranty, I am keen on doing this to my 2016 4.8, will this have an affect on the engine by any chance?

Note: I have not done any major mods other than adding a snorkel, roof rack and replacing the standard HT with goodyear wrangler/kevlar - seems good so far.

Thanks
Regards
Rahul

Not sure on a Patrol, but on my Beemer and Mazda I had a good few years back, I took the cat converter out, but replaced it with a Wildcat exhaust system (BMW straight 6 motors sound beautiful), it did make a bit of a power difference, but that power just made my right foot heavier, especially with the Beemer. So other than messing with the tree peoples CO2 emissions, I think there will be a slightly better power addition, and if the right foot is kept in check, a small fuel efficiency could be achieved... how much remains to be seen.

If a straight 6 BMW motor sounds great, I can only imagine a 4,8 straight six sounding even better

Since owning a Patrol, I have learnt to keep my right foot in check  so I am averaging around 5.5 km/lit towing a small trailer on long hauls.
I am also keen on learning how much of a difference it would make. I am assuming couple of our forum members would have done already

Yeah this sounds about right. I get about 5.8 on the open road (driving 100/110). But ok, my patrol is very heavy, and has muds. If I add the rooftop I get about 5-5.2.

I've just learned to ignore the fuel gauge , why spoil the experience. The 4.8 has not been named nr 1 in the vehicles with the worst fuel consumption (before the y62 was released), and I refuse to drive anything that's not nr 1 :D

I drive 100/110 to get that consumption. But I was keen on doing a decat as per some of the recommendations I read. So I thought I'd find out before I go for it.

I think it will only make a measurable difference if your cat is significantly blocked.

Unfortunately, I don't have any Patrol-specific experience. Although my 4.5 definitely doesn't have a cat anymore.

But on my 3.2 Ford, I'm getting about 0.5 - 0.7L/km better consumption with a de-cat.

I am getting about 5.6 to 5.7/ litres heavily loaded or unloaded. Decat and 63mm freeflow. Vehicle running on 285/70/17s. Consumption is after correction and measured on gps. Offroad 4km/l. Thick sand 3 or less.
