Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

Hi Guys

After 13 years my OME shocks are shot and need replacing, good going I guess, even though the past 6-7 years were mainly soft-roading. So, should I look at replacing the coil springs as well - on a recent trip to the Orange River I had no issues. Taking it to the 'specialists', I'm sure they'll want to replace the lot...
What else should I check?
Should I stick to OME shocks - expensive?
I see a few of you DIY, thank you for your posts?

Would appreciate your advice.

If coils degrade, they sag. Thus, just measure how high your car stands with respect to standard, and whether or not it is standing reasonably level. Note that these only have to measure up to your own expectations, as the springs will probably never break, they will just continue sagging. Eventually you would get to a point where the bump-stops become the springs, and you will certainly need to replace them before that, but exactly when is a personal decision.

However, the springs and shocks do need to form a reasonable partnership, and unless you are replacing the shocks with the same ones you had, it might be difficult to know whether the new ones will work well with the old springs.

As far as what else, I would do a careful inspection of all the suspension bushes (front and rear). It has been my experience that these play a surprisingly big role in just how the car handles, and because the degradation is so gradual, one often doesn't realize untill they are really stuffed.

I would go so dar as to drop out one each of the rear lower control arms and the front arms, as it is really difficult to see the condition with the arms in place.

Also check the front bump stops at the same time.

Just for you to compare, Terrain Tamer shocks were recently quoted at just over R5k for the pair, both front and rear
These are the regular shocks, but the 'firmer ride' option was the same price
The 'pro' shocks with the remote reservoir will be more expensiver

I replaced my OME setup about two or so months back with a full terrain tamer kit and Im very very happy with the kit.

I have just had a 2" terrain taimer full package with dropboxes, new tie-rod ends & bushes all round done, but have not driven the car yet, one difference is that I kept my 30mm coil spacers in.

Apparently it drives like a magic carpet...

Looking forward to getting into the drivers seat myself

We also fitted new brakes discs & pads all round, I will give an update to this post soonest

The biggest difference to you can make to a lifted patrol are those drop boxes. I run 3" lift and it feels like factory steering geometry, maybe even better.

I have driven 100000kms on very k@k worn out suspension, so I can't wait!!!
