Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

I noticed this afternoon after an hours drive from Harties to jhb that the rear wheels were very hot, much hotter than the fronts. They could have actually been doing this for ever now that I think of it, I often noticed heat when walking past the car after a drive, but too dof to think.

So now the trouble shooting.
I’m hoping it’s just binding brakes. Other issues like a diff or bearings sound expensive to me!

Jack it up & see if it spins freely.

After your next drive, try figure out where the heat is coming from. So maybe dont touch directly as it may burn, but if its very hot somewhere you should be able to get close enough to feel.

The thing that makes me a bit nervous is I felt some warmth on the carpet in the back above the axle. I hope it’s not a diff issue!!

Is it the same both sides?

One of those laser thermometers might be a great tool for figuring out where the heat is originating.

You might have some heat in the rear (carpet) close to the exhaust, on my tyre pressure sensor goodie `I normally get a degree or 4 difference between the left and right rear tyres on a long journey. Is it a original exhaust or aftermarket.

Are the warm on both sides or just one side.

Keep in mind the 4.8 uses a small drum (integrated in rear disk) as handbrake and new shoes or poorly adjusted handbrake can create heat but generally goes away in a couple of hundred km

Binding disk brakes is a different story and in my experience generally is a left or right issue and not both side, more so on ABS system where each running it's own circuit.

As for diffs, luckily have limited experience but they normally goes noisy before they go heating.

I stopped at peters place to fetch a tool and he was under the car with his temp gauge as quick as lightning.
Together with his measurement, and I really listened today, it sounds like the right rear pads are rubbing a bit.
I’ll jack it up tomorrow and fix

I’ve only replaced the fronts so far.
I haven’t had a chance since to jack up the rear to check the rear ones now.
Hopefully I’ll get to it in the next couple days, but they’re definitely touching very slightly, when I listen carefully out the window I can hear the rear pads rubbing slightly.

You could have bend your load balancer just check that out . Is your handbrake perhaps not releasing 100%
