Hi There Guys

I am looking at buying my first Patrol and I am looking at a 4.2 pickup. The dealer says it is a 4.4 NA but I think it is a turbo (Only have pics as vehicle is faaaaaar away). Below is a pic of the engine. Can any of see what it is?

Cheers

Paul

Dealer now confirmed it is a Turbo 4.2D

What would classify as too many KM for a vehicle like this? This is an ex-eskom bakkie

In my opinion past 200 000km you can bargain on suspension bushes and wheel bearings in the near future with some water hoses and belts. Budget about R30 000.
A key sign would be the dreaded death wobbles that suspension bushes and bearings needs attention. Just dont skimp on those components. Check that the engine has antifreeze in, if its blue Nissan antifreeze that is great. If no Antifreeze then there is a big chance that at some stage there was overheating or a big chance of thermostat issues that can cause overheating in the future. If the engine is crap just let it go but if the engine is in good condition mileage is not an issue. :mytwocents:

yip, all depending on price. If a good deal and running is given by the dealer (purely because it's an Eskom vehicle and was probably driven like it was stolen), I would if it was me, take the head off, and have the head checked, and while open replace the rings at least. If everything else is ok then you have a damn good motor. If you want to get the TD42 motor to really run and do mods to it gradually, then replace the pistons and rings to Alfin rings. make sure the sleeves are protruding the block by (It's been a while so I may be wrong on the measurement) 0.07mm, or at least flush with the block. Then you are good to go.

First thing is coolant, drain it properly and buy the most expensive brand name or Nissan brand antifreeze and mix exactly as per directions. This is very important.

As time goes by, you will probably get a bigger intercooler, and bigger tyres...and ....and...and.....hahaha.... it's addictive

Dankie Jules

Ja dis ny by Eshowe Ford. Hulle adverteer hom by Toyota ook. Die dealer is baie "cagey" oor my vrae. So ek vertrou nie die afere nie.

Thise factory turbo engines are probably the toughest version of the TD42 ever made.
A compression test will give you the beat answer to the condition of the engine. I
f you see silicone on the sump gaskit or ANY sign that the sump was ever off....... walk away, because that means someone had the head off and the pistons out, and thats because of over heating.
If no sign of tampering, and compression is around 30bar on a dry test it should be all good and will outlast you
