Sale retracted.
Gonna rather keep it, do some cutting and painting and get it looking a little better.

Hey Graham, what did you do with the rack in the end? I also have an old African outback one, trying to decide whether to flog it, paint it, or have it re-powdercoated....

Howzit.

I eventually cut off that top bar, so it’s nice and slimline now, and then I painted it black, but man oh man I butchered the paint job. Did it with hammerite, it looks like a child painted it, but oh well, I don’t care much, haha.

Yeah tried to unbolt my top bar, so rusted I ended up having to drill out most on the bolts. How's the hammerite holding up? Duram 88 also seems to be an option....

Painted my rack in Duram 88, looks good and its durable. Also fairly easily touched up if scratched

Why would you want to paint an aluminum roof rack? I bought a short Out Back made one some time ago that was about 4ft long, which was still about a foot (300mm) too long.

I had 300mm cut out of the centre and had it welded back together. It is now the correct length to fit in front of my RTT on the roof.

The welding burn marks were acid washed off and that really cleaned the whole rack up. I would say that the rack was 5 years old when I bought it 10 or 12 years ago and there seems no need to HAVE TO paint it. At worst, I would rather chemically colour it black, rather than paint it.

Here's a couple of pictures of the rack, my issues are:

Powdercoating is peeling in places
Previous owner drilled holes in it which I want to fill
Mild steel bolts have been used on it which have left rust marks all over the place
It is silver and everything else on the car is black

First prize i'm sure would be an acid wash a re powdercoat. But where to do this and how much? I've never dealt with powdercoating before.

Looking at painting as it will probably be more affordable.....

Ag, the hammerite is perfect, Im a fan of the stuff, it seems really tough. I painted my rims with it too.
But ya, a perfectionist would have a heart attack if they saw my handy work, it really is terrible, I cant stand painting, and it shows in the end result :rolling:

Only reason was I didnt like the look of the silver. I wanted it black rather.
