Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

Hello again, here is another problem: I got a bad rattling while driving on dustroads and now finally I found what the cause should be.
The transfer case lever does hav lateral play where it is attached to the case housing, you can see it on the pic where the play is.
No my question is: can I just loose the bolt, push the rattling part a tad to the right and re-attach the bolt, or Do I need to have that sorted in a more complicated way?

That is something I've never heard of before. Will be interesting to see what the other guys say.

I doubt it will be that simple, but I don't suppose there's any harm in trying?

I stood under my Patrol today (yep, it's possible with some help from a lift) and remembered about this post. It turns out that there's also a large amount of play on mine

I'll see if it's as simple as tightening up a few bolts later in the week...

Ha-ha... everything always looks simple in the manual, but in reals life they go south very quickly!

The cotter pin is stuck solid (as one would expect from after 10 years of mud & grime), so I gave it a decent soaking of Q10 and refastened the retaining screw for the time being. I found that the LR lever has no movement at all on the shaft - it's held very firmly in place.

There's a lot of in & out (horisontal) play in the shaft itself, though. Because the end of the shaft is grooved to take the cotter pin, I suspect the lever will only fit in the exactly the same place. A possible fix may be to insert a washer (or two) between the transfer case and the control lever to take up the play. I'll have another go at it during the weekend after the penetrating oil has had some time to do its magic...

If you struggle then cut down the outer edge of the clamp with a thin grinding disc (to open the clamping force on threads)
Then weld it up again when it's off. In the mean time put a tie wrap around the shaft for the rattle.

In my special case there is a different outcoming: with very high probability the brakes are the culprits. When applying the brakes the rattling does stop - as I only brake rarely on the dust roads I am usually driving on, I didn‘t realize that before.
I am missing the anti-rattle-shims all around and in addition at least one caliper sliding pin has quite some play.
So I ordered a full set of the anti-rattle-shims and pins all around and will have them replaced.
I‘ll follow up if that helped.
