Short barn door check strap extension bracket

Guys,

I am looking for one of those extension brackets for the short barn door check strap on the GU series because the current opening angle interferes with fridge lids.

I can't seem to find anybody in Australia that actually is willing to post one to South Africa (although I will keep on trying) and I did read that at some point Grootseun had had some made up but he has not responded to the PM that I sent him.

If anybody has any reasonably positive sources – local or Australian – for an extension bracket, please let me know.

Cheers,
Eddy's owner

Years ago (around 2012) a former member known as "Grootseun", had these extension brackets designed and cut for the small barn door of the Y61.
It did not result in opening as wide as the Y60, but made a big difference nonetheless.
I have one on my GU, and have been meaning to take it off for someone like Piet maybe to take measurements to make more.

If I get the time later this week, I will take some pictures.

Yes, I need to do that before Witblits departs, which seems most likely early December.

Okay, I saw that with shipping, customs and VAT it was going to cost a small fortune to get one from Aus and I would have to wait weeks for it. So last night I quickly made up an overlay bracket for myself. Its a fully reversible mod to the standard thing and works perfectly. The door opens and stops at the point where I can slide a sheet of newspaper between the door chrome trim and the edge of the tail light. The only thing is that I somewhat stripped the bolt head putting it in so its now "semi-permanent". :-)

Ag, as jy dan so mooi vra... :-)

On the second photo, note how I bent the end of the overlay plate over the edge of the original bracket (after having fed it between the bracket and the stay arm) so that the original bracket can never pull out. The original bracket is in effect securely held between the bent the end of the overlay bracket and the bolt – so it has no movement at all. I fed the overlay bracket into the aperture between the original bracket and the stay arm, and then after having correctly positioned the whole so that the bolt will hold the original bracket on the one end, I bent at the end of the plate over and then used a Dremel or to grind away the excess material. The only (minor) modification that is required to the original plate is to slightly grind away the end of the plate that is closest to the load bay so as to enable the bolt to pass through the new whole in the overlay plate in the correct position. Otherwise the door will open too far and will contact the edge of the tail light. The whole thing was made out of one part of an old canopy clip that I had lying around. I then also took a washer of approximately the right thickness and ground away part of it so that it "mates" nearly perfectly with the original factory plate so that the overlay plate is level and can grip the entire original factory plate along its full length. The whole contraption is not particularly pretty but it it is cheap, easy and quick to make up, does work very well and is very secure.
