Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

The flimsy brackets that fastens the plastic corner pieces of my Patrol's rear bumper to the chassis has broken off and I want to replace the corners with steel. With my limited knowledge of plate work it seems that it will be at least two pieces namely the side cut and bend and the rear cut and bend separately. Then welding the 2 pieces together and the idea was to manufacture it out of 2mm mild steel but my question is: Will the 2mm steel twist too much when it is welded?

Mine was not strong enough
So I ended up having the corners connected with a piece of steel that runs just above the aluminium section in the centre rear (see first picture), and then also had it strengthened with a thick piece of steel running inside the wheel arch and welded to the chassis (second picture).

This is now strong enough to my satisfaction to carry spare wheel on a swing arm etc.
But in hindsight not worth the trouble. If I was to donit again, I would just replace with a bona fide rear bumber and get it over with.

I think you need mounting brackets of at least 5mm plate, and possible a rib or stiffener half-way to the end as well.

If you intend to put jacking points or swing arms or anything like that, 5mm must become 10mm and 2mm must become 3-5mm...

Baie dankie aan almal. My idee was om net die plastiese deel te vervang met so dun as moontlik staal, maar daar sal lang sweislasse nodig wees wat die dunner staal sal laat skeef trek.
Ek wou die bestaande bracket hou
en ook die rubber vashegting
Ek het nou stainless steel brackets in die plek van flimsy plastic brackets vasgesit en sal so ry tot ek besluit om agterbuffer geheel te vervang
