4.8 Suspension noise

My 4.8GRX (2007 with 80,000km) makes a knocking noise when i am in 4x4. I noticed it the first time when entering Atlantis dunes (sand) just after i have engaged 4x4 mode. It is also quite loud when i go over obstacles and it sounds like suspension being knocked by hammer (more specifically the coils not seated properly). Here is a video where you can hear it happening (turn your volume way up). Ive not paid to much attention to it as I thought it might be normal with the lift kit etc... however i heard a similar noise (sounds like something under tension suddenly releasing) while driving on tar in 4x2 mode the weekend which sparked me to think something is wrong. difficult to pin point the location of the sound while offroad but the incident over the weekend sounded (and felt) like it comes from the bottom of the left side of the vehicle (my wife though i drove over something that shot up against the car)

This was recorded during an outing with Steve (Biggles) at Honingklip in Feb.

Any advice please.

Thanks Tinus - any idea where a novice like me can get a copy of the 101 for greasing a prop shaft slip joint?

Might be worth checking the freewheel hubs, they get sticky after a while and they tend to do this as well.

There is a thread under the drivetrain section on freewheel hubs

Another possibility is that you have a broken anti-sway bar.

As Tinus said, it's very simlple to grease the slip joints. There is a grease nipple on each, on the outside of the propshaft. While you are busy, also grease the universals. Each one has a grease nipple on the cross-piece, inside "inside" the u-joint. So there are six grease nipples on the drivetrain that need greasing every 10k km.

Maybe check all the rear control arm bushes for separation, I had one bush that had separated so the steel control arm could move excessively in the chassis mounting making noises
