I hear you got some damage on the Three Provinces trip. Are you looking for a 'trol now ?

yes, I broke a sideshaft at 3 Provinces. Adernaline and a yankee v8 are not kind to the pajero drivetrain. I bounced at the top of helshoogte and...snap!

anyway, I have sourced a shaft and will effect the repairs next week.

But, I am fixing to sell. i love the vehicle and it puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. However, for the type of offroading I do I need a vehicle with a better matched engine/drivetrain. I am partial to the patrol and by all accounts it has the most robust drivetrain of all. My buddy has a 80 series cruiser and he thinks i should get a cruiser.
the advantage of the cruiser is that the spares are (generally) more plentiful, cheaper and widely available, whereas the patrols are a lot less so. Having said that, my heart is more set on a patrol. A GU possibly, but I really love the GQ. Over the past year I have been looking at Patrols for sale and found that often a good condition GQ sells for more than a GU!

In order to purchase a vehicle I first have to sell the Pajero and one of my two platkarre. Once I've done that I will start seriously looking.

Yes the choice between a Patrol and a Cruiser can take very long.....specially if you have friends that have both.

I think in general the Patrols are ALOT cheaper to buy than a Cruiser so you get very good value for money......plus its not going to get stolen as well
I am also a fan if the 80 series Cruisers buy the way

You are right about the GQ's, they are awesome and very closely priced to the GU's

Ideally I would like to get a 1992 GQ Diesel which has had a decent aftermarket turbo and intercooler done (and possibly a bigger radiator). the only reason is that they appear to offer better fuel consumption figures..... and sound bloody awesome.

From all that I've read, the fact is that the Patrol is not an eco wagon, thus a patrol purchase -diesel or petrol - is going to leave the wallet somewhat anemic. No need for anti-depressant medication for me though as I already drive a guzzler and have been somewhat acclimatised to the pain which accompanies a visit to the local sasol.

With that in mind, a petrol GQ or GU is also good. I believe the GU's have more robust CV's than the GQ, however, I havent read of many CV failures in the GQ. perhaps I need an education in this still. The GU is a prettier vehicle too, but there's just something about the GQ's industrial, utilitarian appeal.

Nothing is unbreakable, but I have heard of 1,000hp+ converisons in the Emirates being done to Patrols, without any mods done to the drive train.
So the V8 and Patrol drive train are defientely better potential companions!

Anthony, I have seen you drive at At se Gat during the Classic Series challenge in 2014, and I do recall your aggressive style!

I have not had a problem where I could not find a part. Dawid Volschenk, provide Patrol scrap material, and has been very good in everything that I have required thus far.
In fact I cannot recall where someone on this forum had been struggling with a particular part?
Struggling with the service of a particular dealer, yes, but not the parts.

One plus of the Patrol group, is that you then start to belong to a small family.

I certainly am glad to hear of the availability of spares. I'm even more convinced that a patrol is my best choice.

At se Gat, I remember that. I certainly did approach a couple of those obstacles with ..... exuberance... I've been there many times since then. It's one of my favourite places for a 1 nighter and a drive.

My mate with the 80 cruiser is somewhat more adventurous than I am. He has broken his vehicle a lot more than I have. but then he attempts some really tough obstacles.

Patrol family... I have been a beneficiary of that already, Oelies and Dirk both helped me ought of a tight situation on the return journey from a river trip in 2014. Real gentlemen they were.

Pieter, yes I remember, you had bought Dirk's old rig. I see you are in Randburg. Any chance i could come over for a test fitting. I have never sat in the drivers seat of a Patrol.
