Buying vs hiring a caravan - 1 week trip, Cape Town!

Hi Folks

So we're looking to hire a 6 berth (or more) caravan for a week at the end of April (trip from Cape Town to the Karoo for Afrika Burn). Very few left in Cape Town and working out to about R16k to hire for the week!

Found several caravans for sale for around R30k on Gumtree, and even one as low as R16k negotiable! So it seems a better option is simply to buy one for the trip and resell when we back - and may even break even there!

We know next to nothing about caravans and would appreciate any insights!

It's going to be about a 5 hour trip from Cape Town on gravel roads (pretty good condition) And once at the destination, will be parked off for the week.

Ideally would like a shower and a toilet. (The caravan on sale for R16k doesn't have either)

Probably will have chaps driving down from Jhb, so not restricted to hiring/buying in Cape Town.

Cheers!

R16k for a week sounds very expensive. We are renting a Bushlapa Miskruier for 7 days over the long weekend at the end of April for around R4k. That's in Pretoria.

Caravans don't take kindly to dirt roads. Loads of dirt get's sucked in and if the road is poor all the cupboards will start coming loose. Driving a few km's on dirt wont be that bad, but long distances will ruin it. Perhaps see if you can't hire a offroad trailer. Specify you want one with a gas geyser and a shower cubicle. Some of your guests might need to bunk on a stretcher but that should be fun!
