Hi all

A merry Christmas to you all, hope you had a great day.

My pick up and off road caravan is currently in Windhoek and we are planning on driving back to SA in Jan. I have taken numerous different routes in the past and want to see if I can do a new route back home this trip. We will be crossing the orange river at Sendelings drif if it is operational and the start from there.

We want to stay as close to the shore line as possible on our way down to Cape town and then Mosselbay. Have any off you done a similar trip? Were can we camp and what routes are nice to drive?

Jaco

Hi Jaco.
I did that part of the trip 2 years ago going from Van Zyls to CT and then to Durban and it was great. Klein Aus has a campsite if you are going there. The ferry seemed to be in good condition and ran regularly. The road afterwards is quite bad to Alexander bay, but then is tar to Port Nolloth where there is a lovely campsite, Mcdougalls. There is a turnoff to Kleinsee and they let me pass through the booms after signing their ledger. Just after Hondeklip Bay, you can turn into Namaqua coast national park through a gate. There was no one at the gate as you pay the fee when you leave at the South gate. The sand is quite deep here and I got stuck twice until I found the right tyre pressure. It seemed as if people were camping but as I had no reservation I just passed through. You can then follow the Spoornet toll road down to Lamberts bay. It was quite interesting during the later part of the trip as my Garmin indicated I was often below sea level.
T4A shows most of the campsites and route if you have it but campsites are quite well sign posted.
After CT, just hug the coast as the roads are good.
I hope this will be of some help. Please let me know if you need any further info.

Kind regards.
Barry

Hi Kagiso.

I was there around March 2012 and at the boom gate the guard asked me to sign his entry ledger but never asked me for a permit. Jaco should ask at Port Nolloth if things have changed. On the Spoornet Toll road they have toll gates at which you pay.

Regards.
Barry
