Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

I have a 1999 4.2 at a 100km slight steering wobble at 110km no wobble, but when breaking at this speed a serious wobble?????

I have changed the tyres around, done the wheel balancing and wheel alignment twice at different places still no change, and on a very bad corrugated road i can hear a solid knock from the front wheels at intervals, on a not so bad corrugated road no knocks.

Would appreciate any advice.

If I remember correct this has been discussed here before.
Search for death wobble.
I stand corrected but in some of the cases this was solved by correcting the king pin pre-load.
It might be worth checking.
Also make sure the bushes in the strut connecting the diff to the body (preventing diff left to right movement). Check those bushes and make sure they are PROPERLY bolted down.

Had it on my "new 2006" 4.8 when I got it tyre pressure was out so got them to the right pressure which improved things, then sent it into Graham for a major service and he found the two front wheel bearing where loose, fixed and now no wobble

Yip ... combination of all of the above can cause your wobble.

I did the wheel bearing check on mine.... was all good

I did the wheel balancing and pressure check .... all good

I removed one shim from the top and bottom kingpin bearing and wobble completely gone.

Mine is also a 99 model with 250 000km on and doubt these bearings have ever been changed. So there will be wear on these bearings. Try it on both sides ( top and bottom bearings) and if this resolves the issue then you can drive around like that for many Km before they need replacing, or you can then at your leisure source new kingpin bearings and replace them and refit the shims to get the correct preload.

I must still replace my kingpins ..... one day

While you need to check all the things mentioned above, I suspect your major problem is probably a warped brake disk or two...

Any body got a download of a work shop manual for guidance of king pin shim and pre-load settings.

Will try this one first, any way of checking for play or tolerances before stripping?, seeing that same model and engine, and my milage 198k, never done this before my first Patrol can you step guide me through this one.

I used this youtube video as a reference, and its pretty much spot on. Even the *^%#% two bolts close to the hub as he describes was relatively easily removed after listening to him.



If I recall it took me longer to jack the car up and remove the wheels than it did to remove bearing and one shim, clean the bearing and refit the bearing.
