Rebore and resleeve

Post by Magiel Oberholster »

Naand almal.
Ek wil weet waar kan ek my blok laat boor, en weer resleeve. Kan ek net die beskadigde piston vervang of is dit beter om almal te vervang. En wat gaan die kostes beloop.

If the head is still 100%, then the costs are not going to be wild.

I would replace all 4 pistons and rings with Alfin type pistons ( check out Michaels thread - http://www.patrol4x4.co.za/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=4458 ) or my post from a long time ago ( search for - Iron Maiden burnt a hole ) for reasons why the Alfin pistons in my opinion are the better way to go.

For the engineering, I only know the guy that did my motor in Alberton. He did everything for me including rebuilding the head and seating valves etc for R 3000. But that was for 6 cylinders, and also 4 years ago.

I believe that everything can be bought from places like Alert or similar places, but again I would say head gasket and anti freeze/coolant MUST be from the agents. Anti freeze is a VERY important item that guys tend to overlook and chuck any old sh..... into the radiator. The correct dilution of the antifreeze/coolant is VERY important. There is hydrochloric acid in antifreeze/coolant that if not used correctly it will eat your engine away. It's there to keep the ports clean. We all know how important cooling is on a diesel !!

Look forward to seeing the rebuild when you do it !!!

Cedric

The Alfin type pistons and rings are designed for turbo motors. The top ring has a bevel on one side of the ring ( half keystone if I remember correctly ). The Alfin ( Keystone) piston has the grooves to hold this type of ring. When the cylinder is under compression the ring squeezes against the sleeve to create a better seal. The higher the compression the more the ring squeezes.

The down side to these pistons is that if you leave the diesel engine idling for loooooooong periods of time there is a chance hat you will glaze the sleeves. So start the motor, and you can let it idle for maybe a minute, but then you need to drive gently till temperatures are up to normal. Then you drive like you stole it. A diesel motor doesn't like to be treated like a new born baby. It is a workhorse motor and must be worked to maintain the motor in good condition. Regular servicing is therefore a high priority.

I agree with Cedric, never warm up an engine.....its really bad for the engine and sleeve glazing is the result
