Does anyone know this patrol
Greating all.
Looking for a bit of advice..
After a great deal of searching and test driving numerous patrol, from the 4.8, 4.5 and a lucky strike on a 4.2 TDi gu wagon that i liked very much. I have now found one that I am very interested in. Infact it's probably found me.. It continues to pop up everywhere I go these days until recently I gave in and went for a test drive in it.
WOW!! Like the freaking Titanic..

I am usually a bit suspect about vehicles with wild modifications, especially engine and drive train.
This one has a free flow with branches and a Uni chip map. basically the same motor set up as Christo Boegman's GQ
Next to that its lifted, with all the bells and whistles including extended swaybar links, panhard rods and bushes. neat job. ( not your, average agg lets just stick some coils in and off we go attitude.) nice professional work done here.
As can be seen in the advert on gumtree its alot of vehicle for a very reasonable price, considering kilo's and year model. which I thick is early days for a patrol.
Does anybody know this vehicle or the owner Christo Vd Merwe, Im not sure if he is on the forum.
Whats your thaughts.
I do have bucks set aside for basic things like radiator, viscus fan and water pump.
Anything else you guys could advise on looking into before I by accident and blindness go lay down good money on a troubled vehicle (again).

Re: Does anyone know this patrol
Don't forget, very neat bumpers as well as good tyres that seem very new too.
On the face of it seems like a good deal.
Being a coastal car, do you know how to look for rust (other than the normal surface rust)?
There may be some risk with the engine, depending on how well it had been treated by the previous owner(s).
If treated well, there should not be an issue.
Did it perform well when you drove it?
Do you know if it had been opened up at any time or chipped?
The absence of proof may be telling. If you get the service history, and there is not much there, it may be that something significant had been done to it at some point.
However if the history is complete, that suggest that it had been kept well and no traumatic interventions done to it.

Hi Alex
Why do you not send a PM to Gman (he is down your part of the world), it looks like the front and rear bumpers where made by him so he may know that Patrol, otherwise ask if he can have a look at it for you to get an objective opion on it. cheers Ian

Re: Does anyone know this patrol
Hi all.
Firstly thank you all for the prompt responses.
Regarding the test drive.
I really did enjoy the drive. Everything in the cab is mechanically sound. Heater, aircon, elec windows and all the other gadgets that have been installed such as the compressor and rear work lights. Wiring setup also looks nice and neat. Professionaly done for sure.
As for the physical driving experience. It drove beautifully. Got a bit of a look from the owner. Jumping on and off the gas as to jerk the car trying to hear for any drive train noises. Drop it in third at very low speeds with my foot flat down still couldn't hear any strange noises from the gearbox. Did a few full lock turns and also no strange noises.
It seems to me all okay mechanically. But I will definitely try to get in contact with gman this afternoon still via pm

Re: Does anyone know this patrol
Done and dusted,
Really impressed with the car.
Just need to get a sign on the back saying that its not my old mans.
Getting strange looks from the guys at the trails.
Now all that's let to do is keep an ear to the ground for Forum gatherings here in the cape.
