Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

Evening gents,

I am in the market for and older rugged pick up. This vehicle will be mainly used on the farm and the occasional open road towing of a 2 ton trailer.
Hopefully vehicle will also see some overlanding. This will be my second vehicle.

Patrol pick up is defnitly on my list and has been for a long time. My question, How does the pickup perform towing heavy loads?
I see it is registered to tow 2.5 ton braked trailers which is higher than cruiser bakkies.

My budget is +/- R120K so it will probably be a 2007/2008 models if I can get one.

Well the previous 4.2d is a good towing vehicle slow but very stable and reliable, I tow with my Station wagon anything from a 4.2ton unbraked harvester bed to a 3ton braked cattle trailer, uphill downhill over ploughed fields and I've never had issues besides when I cracked the head on about 380000km due to a leaking cooler. My tdi pickup I use for heavy loading sometimes as much as 1.5t and all goes well. The only thing to watchout on all of the models even the 4.2 cruisers are overheating when pushed very hard for long distances and uphills.

One of the roofing suppliers in warmbad area has a 4.2 patrol that he uses to deliver roofs .....he broke two cruisers in 2 years constant diff and gear box failure. Has been using patrol for 3 years now not one problem ...makes you think ne ?

Tinus, like I've always said the patrols are better in many ways than a cruiser just extremely underated. For example patrols have timing gears so no cambelt replacement. Cruiser have a timing belt!

Yip he had a brand new 4.2 then they told him to change it to a 4.5 and still had the same diff and gearbox issues. ...he then got a N/A 4.2 pick up second hand while issues where sorted by them .....I think is been 3 years now not one problem ....same clutch ect .
Also mr Boegman has 2 4.2 pick ups that he works hard and he has taken them to Tet in moz loaded to the max ....I have no problem with a cruiser think that they are good bakkies ...just overrated in this country. ...also way over priced ....but that is what supply and demand does for you .
I 4.2 is not the fastest one but using it correctly it will work for many many years

One last question: is there a big difference in power between TDI and normal?
Should i be picky and only go for TDI?

Power difference, well I must admit there is quite a difference in fuel consumption but actual power not to much, cannot really use mine to compare theres a big difference because of tweaks done to the fuel pump. And being set up exactly, but it all depends what you want to do with it, a used turbo diesel is always risky unless full history is known. Must admit I'd still buy turbo although the none is still more reliable and should give you at least 400000km! My turbo has now done 221000km all is well except for altenator bearing and a fuelpump drive seal.

Without turbo.... it's a bit of a donkey, but the turbo is only really an altitude compensator, that just gives the edge when overtaking. Good maintenance records and an EGT gauge will show if the previous owner looked after it!!
