Cant see any problem when I then drive again all OK. Does any body know what this might be. I think it might be the hubs locking or????????

Auto hubs only have "Auto" and "Lock" setting.

The sound you hear is the free wheel hub trying to engage. This happens when the grease becomes sticky due to age or when cold.
The sticky grease then mimics the auto lock action inside the hub. The hub teeth are moving at different speeds and grind together until violently engaging when you go slow enough. It is not good for drivetrain components.
Remove the hub lock assembly , clean and regrease with the Nissan prescribed grease. I know the correct grease to use has been discussed on another thread.
To remove the freewheel lock , first set the selector to "lock". Then remove the six allen key retaining bolts.
The locker will now come free from the hub. Slight hammer tap might be needed. Don't try and disassemble that locker. You will never get it together and working again. Just wash it with degreaser , apply new grease and re assemble in reverse order.
Hope this helps,
Chris.

If you need to drive it before you can get around to fixing it, manually lock the hubs (both hey). This will only have a slight increase in fuel consumption, no other negative side effects.

Peter, IIIRC that's what the manual says as well for the cold grease situation.
FWIW, I see some folk remove the auto-locking component altogether from the unit. This then enables the use of 2wd low range on hard surfaces - for example maneuvering a heavy boat on a slipway. There are online articles on how to remove it. Seems quite straightforward.

I want to remove mine. My dads patrol is manual and I prefer that. I want a Nissan 76.

Took both mine apart today one have broken part inside, other still good cleaned greased and assembled. It's easy to make it manual like the assists does. O Ja and easy to strip and assemble again too. But to the short my one hub is shot (after it did 458000km) now where to find new one or sommer get 2 manual ones.
