Re: 1991 GQ 4.2 diesel Questions
The shut-off problem has now been fixed and the problem was what I suspected, a missing bush on the diesel pump's shut off actuator.

FYI, here's a video I took in the engine bay of the GQ to find the shut-off problem.

Zantus congratulations, I phoned the the day before you bought it. Was still arranging to get to EC and she was gone. For the price advertised it was a bargain.

Re: 1991 GQ 4.2 diesel Questions
Thanks Jacque, but I will be putting in about R10K-15K without really doing any modification, just a lot of small things that needed attention and I'm slowly working through a long list.
My only worry is that I hope I can keep it when all that repairs are done and I don't need to allocate the money invested to something else, because even with all the issues, it's a really great vehicle

Re: 1991 GQ 4.2 diesel Questions
Good day to ask for an update
Got her back from the mechanic today after week.
The folowing work was done:
-The rear crank oil seal replaced
-Flywheel skimmed
-Clutch re-lined
-Oil filters and oil
-Diesel filter
-Air filter
-Cooling system flushed...the one mounting bolt on the thermostat housing is about to break, so it was left in tact and will be tackled next week when a bolt removal expert is in the area to assist, in case it does break off.
-Rear diff flushed and filled with the correct grade of LSD oil.
-General service check-up and adjustments/lubrication where needed.
Last weekend I took it to local playground and tried it on a few obstacle. Fully aware that it is an excellent overlanding car and not as suited to trails as my 4.5GU, the old girl did very well. Here's a video I compiled of the GoPro footage I took on Sunday.
I still need do something about the knocking body mounts, but the engine mounts are actually still ok and not damaged as I thought.....cannot say the same of the one on my GU
I have another can of Tectyl I will be emptying on the Patrol, taking me to about R500 in Tectyl on it so far.....since the bodywork wasn't the best job around, I want to give it the best chance of preventing the development of rust soon.
I will be giving the wheels a layer or two of paint. Someone painted the wheels without removing the wheel weights, and that just freaks me out!
Lastly it needs a really good valet...along with a well cared for engine and drive train, I like the interior of a vehicle to be spotlessly clean .

There's some info on it. It prevents rust and I've used it on the body seams and all the usual places rust tends to develope.

Re: 1991 GQ 4.2 diesel Questions
The right buyer came along today and the old girl is gone again
Pity I couldn't keep it, but the finances were needed for another project.
