Rooftop tents x2

Post by offroadbiker »

Has anybody fitted 2x rooftop tents to the Patrol?

My current "cooler box" is nice, however it only takes 2 persons and this is no longer adquate, so considering putting 2 "normal" rooftop tents on to accomodate all warm bodies.

Is this advisable taking weight into consideration?

Want to fit one with ad a room to open on drivers side and other one to open over bonnet so that ladder hooks up to front bumper...

Tx

Hi Dirk, I don't know that is a lot of weight on one roof! I have two on my 130 Landy but one is on the front section and one is on the rear (two separate roofs!) What about what I have done on my off road trailer and get one of the big ones my one is 1.6m x 2.4m? Cheers Ian

I find one RTT can be big enough for 2 and half people.
One couple and someone less than 10.

Two RTTs: Maximum static weight on the roof is 200 kg. When off-roading it should be less?
You can go more than the recommendd Nissan maximum, but I would not risk it.

So if you have two RTTs, make sure they are the more modern ones and not the heavy big wooden floor ones.
And do the maths, do not invite your largest buddies to go camping with you!

4 avearge people of 70kg = 280kg plus wait of tents is gonna come close to 340kg when static :surprised:

Now my question is that if only the two tents is on while driving that is aprx 60kg which should not be a problem, it comes when it is bed time - question part- seeing that half of the tent folds away from the actual roof and "rests" on the ladder does this not reduce the wait on the roof?

Dirk, not that much weight is placed on the flappy out part of the RTT as all the fixing points are onto the roofrack. Yes, It can be done but it is still a lot on the roof..... and no playing doctor doctor on there either.... constant repetitive shock loads are not good for Patrol or any roof for that matter.... :rolling: :rolling: :rolling: :rolling:

What we did was buy a 3 second pop up tent ( that takes ten minutes, after the third time, to fold up into the bag once you have spent 3 hours and many many swear words) for the kids to sleep in. It fits perfect between the ladder and the door or the Patrol. and is really not difficult to transport or twist tuck and roll back int the bag.... one you have finished the first few times swearing. This works for us.

I was told in no uncertain term that there will be no sleeping on the ground when visiting Kgalagadi so for my family this seems to not be an option

Thus the reason for wanting to replace the "cooler box" with rooftop tents :helpsign:

As far as I remember you can only have 150kg on the roof but maybe that is only when you drive!

Great minds think alike / fools never differ
Whichever, but that is what we have, one RTT and one 3man pop-up tent. No Cedric it takes me 20 seconds. Not ten minutes?!?!
We will be 4x4 camping through the Kruger end of March doing this.

Kruger Lions seem to be less interested in the ground floor tents than the Kgalegadi lions? Touch wood.
I have heard and read more than one case of late of the Kgalegadi lions keeping petrified inhabitants up all night.
