Tell me about your Patrol
Hi guys
Happy new year and all that.
I hope you have all seen the new series of articles that we are running in WegRy/Drive Out? We choose a vehicle and look into all the pros and cons of it and also what to look out for when buying it second hand. So far we have covered the Jeep Wrangler TJ, Land Rover Defender and the Land Cruiser 80 Series. Next up it's obviously the Patrol.
So first things first, who would be the best guys to talk to to get all the information I need to put an article like this together?
The information I am looking for is this:
What is the history of the Patrol? When did it come to South Africa?
What different models are there, which one would be best suited for our discussion? (There we are looking at a vehicle no older than 20 years, that is available on the second hand market for under R200 000. But also not the newest models. Me thinks the Y60 and Y61's would be best suited?) we need to decide on one and focus on that one only. (at a later stage the other one can be discussed).
What engine variants, gearboxes, diffs, etc were available? And how were they distinguished? Trim levels?
What should a prospective buyer be on the lookout for when considering one?
What are the pro's to owning a Patrol? What are the cons?
I think that is quite a mouthful to start off with. So, any takers? I know there are a hell of a lot of knowledgeable okes here, so hopefully this will be easy to hash out.
Thanks
Gerrie

Gerrie, Praat met
Tour de Frans (Frans)
Peter Connan (Peter)
Grootseun (Dirko)

Re: Tell me about your Patrol
Gerrie,.....phew for the Patrol info there are many guys here that have a wealth of knowledge. We could talk for days, just on the debate of diesel v petrol....
Ultimately, it all comes down to what application you want your patrol to do for you. I wanted the 4.2 Diesel with a turbo for fuel economy and zero electronics for serious overlanding reliability, as Its my daily drive. Others like Chris Skinner uses his mostly for schlepping his monster boat to the coast and back.
If you need info on the 4.2 Diesel (Y61) I can help you there if you need. Grant, who has the same as me, but the Y60 series, I'm sure can give you loads of info too.
The 4.8 petrol Patrols I think don't often come around under the R 200 000 mark so that leaves it down to the 4.5 ( Y61) and at the moment very affordable (Y60) with the 4.2 Petrol motor.
Keep us posted

http://www.patrol4x4.co.za/memberlist.p ... file&u=867

Re: Tell me about your Patrol
Hi Gerrie

Re: Tell me about your Patrol
