Problem with fuel consumption
Hi there,
I am new in the block and a relatively greenhornish Patrol owner (2001, 4.5l petrol, injection).
Recently my fuel consumption suddenly shot through the roof (normally 6 to 7 l, now between 4 and 5)
and the idling is inconsistent (should be 900, but goes up to 1300 even if engine is warm).
I took it to my mechanic (Auto Rosen, Strydom Park) but he doesn't know what to do.
Does anybody have an idea what the problem could be?
Any advise would be most appreciated.
Johannes

Re: Problem with fuel consumption
We all have a problem with fuel consumption - now with fuel prices rocketing 2nd hand prices should also drop and more patrols should come available on the floor as well.
Regarding your problem, first look at the usual supects: Filters, leaks, sparkplugs etc. also check thermostat - wrong coolant temperatures will yield inefficiency.
If there is no problem, check the brakes, especially the rear ones. Are they warm after a drive even though used very sparingly. Also check the handbrake.
Then, use the EOBDII tool to reset the ECU, or disconnect the battery for 30mins.
Cheers

Re: Problem with fuel consumption
We all love ur trollies if you got 6-7 km per liter and you didnt change any thing like tires ect then u have a problem
I would suggest that u take it to Graham cumming . He has one of those 4.5 also and he works on a lot of the members cars
he has all the tools to reset ecu s ect and knows the electrial system values out of his head . Mabe your M A S or something is giving problems . Also the feul pump can do the same . Speak to the patrol professor he wil sort u out

Re: Problem with fuel consumption
Maak soos Tinus sê. Vat jou Trollie na Graham Cumming toe. Hy sal jou Trollie uitsorteer.

Re: Problem with fuel consumption
Hi Johannes
Could you sort the idling problem out? My idling is also not constant and it is independent of engine temperature. Some times when the engine is hot it will still be 1300 or so? Fuel consumption is 5-6km/l. Would like to know if it can be sorted.
Thanks

Graham checked the feul pressure and it was way off ...needed a new pump unsure if its sorted they were only getting radiator from tombo today but johannes will let us know once all is done .......nice to go and visit Graham and see 4 patrols in one workshop at the same time ....

Re: Problem with fuel consumption
Kyk of jou kabels nie te styf is nie - hulle moet so 'n bietjie speling hê ....
