Hi guys has anybody used tracks4africa on their iPad or iPhone and is it sufficient for over landing or do I still need a GPS of some sort?

Rather get a good separate GPS. Cell phones are a hassle in GPS mode, and only good for short trips.

I have used Tracks4Africa recently on my iPad in my Patrol. I bought a very good quality mount (suction cup variety imported from the States), and the iPad is now fitted above the centre console vent outputs. Very easy to unclip when you park, to hide away.
Excellent size screen compared to a Garmin, and Tracks4Africa did a great job with the navigation. (I previously used Tracks4Africa on a Garmin V GPS, but the iPad is just so much better and usable with this excellent data)
And the other advantage - you can use the iPad for so much more... It plays music through bluetooth to the stereo, and navigation directions are also routed via the bluetooth, you can use it for quick internet access on the road, messaging, photo storage, banking, etc.

Morning Corne.
What GPS application do you use,on your Ipad? Because normally T4A is only a map set!
As for normal city traveling i like to use Waze, because all users live updates.

T4A release an iPad version in June, I think.

It is really good!

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but does the iPad have it's own GPS sensor, or does it rely on Wi-Fi and or 3G/GPRS/EDGE to determine its position?

It has its own GPS sensor. I find it more sensitive than the older Garmin devices. Tracks4Africa basicaly usese the IGO engine. I have used my iPhone to navigate and no problems so far. Just as reliable as a dedicated GPS but with a lot more functions.

Just make sure you buy the iPad with 3G capabilities. The "WiFi only" version does not have GPS, but the 3G version has a dedicated GPS ability.

Oom Mac, dit is hoekom ek ook gevra het of daar 'n losstaande GPS is wat kan werk waar mens geen sein het nie.
